Will Eagles de-activate Vick?

Last week, we noted that Michael Vick seems to have been fitted with a set of rose-colored glasses.

In comments to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Vick said that he thinks the team will keep trying to implement the Wildcat into the gameplan, and that eventually it'll work. Seems a little pointless with the way the Eagles' traditional offense is playing, but sure.

As for the Wildcat's long-term prospects in Philly, offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg expressed dissatisfaction with how the team was playing out of the formation, and when asked whether he'll eventually just throw it out altogether, he gave a telling smile and declined comment.

Vick had one just one Wildcat snap against the Giants on Sunday, and we wouldn't be surprised if he has one less this Sunday against the Cowboys. With the way McNabb and Co. are playing, there's no need for a "change of pace".

I dont think we will de-activate him, but I know we need to stop running those shitty plays. Every time we do its a waste of a down.

I still feel that Vick can give a couple productive downs per game, but we have to find other ways. We need to implement him on some trick plays, put him in the backfield with McCoy/Westy/Weaver, put him out at wide out, maybe a reverse and a throw..... idk; but what we are doing with this wildcat business certainly isnt working.

I think they should just release him, re-sign Garcia and be done with this experiment.
Nothing against Vick, but the team shouldn't be dealing with these kinds of questions when they're a serious NFC contender.

The Eagles just need to let Vick go. Things aren't working out in Philly, the Eagles can't find a spot for him in their offense.

Vick doesn't have that many years left before his age really starts catching up to him.

We're almost halfway through the season, and some teams' seasons are already over, Vick joining one of these teams would at least boost ticket sales.

If you can't figure out a way to move the ball with this guy, even a couple times this season, you're a moron.

He may not be effective as an all-time QB but there is no way a guy with his talent can't produce something for you at some point. Seeing the success Miami is having with the Wildcat, I'd say the problem is more in the Eagles' play designs rather than the formation.

As great as the Wildcat can be I don’t think it’s a good system for Vick. The majority of Vick’s success as a runner came on broken plays or on plays where the team was still in a passing formation. The problem with the Wildcat is that teams know if Vick is behind center he more than likely is going to be running the ball. Vick is a QB with the ability to run….not a runner who can throw a football sometimes.

Here's a thought - maybe Vick isn't what Vick used to be.

So far (and I watch every Eagles game religiously), I've seen nothing from Vick that reminds me of the old Vick, save for the 7 on his jersey.
He seems tentative, slower, etc...

The Eagles should not be wasting their time on him when they're trying to win a title. If they were an 8-8 team, Cleveland or a team trying to fill the stands, ok, but they're not.

I think you may be right there. Miami run the wildcat a lot more than other teams, and obviously practice it a bit more.

Should have traded him when they had the chance. Maybe next season he will look better, not playing football for a few years did nothing good for him. Now whenever he gets put in the game it seems whatever they try doesn't work.

I think he will definitely be better next season. Will be interesting to see if the Eagles are willing to give him the chance though.

Vick is like Barry Sanders. Not in running ability or in talent, but he is a player whose production is very similar. Vick wouldn't make long sustained drives, he would do nothing, then have an explosive play, then go back to doing little or nothing. Over the course of a game, he would end up with 50+ yards rushing and 150+ yards passing, but in reality, most of those yards would come on only a handful of plays.

How can you take a guy whose production is like that and think he is going to be only explosive when he is out there only a limited amount of plays? Sure, he might break 1, but most of the time, little or nothing will happen, just like when he was in Atlanta. Expecting more is only setting yourself up for failure.

Plain and simple, Vick would only be successful as a starter, this situational stuff just doesn't make sense for his all or nothing style.

Yesterday I had some guys come in to my job and bitch about the Eagles not using Vick properly. It was pretty annoying because they just put up 40 on the Giants without him. I don't see what Vick can do that McNabb cant, maybe other than being a little faster.

I wish they'd cut him and Crazy Old Al would sign him. JMarc might be one of the few QBs less accurate than him... Plus, Vick can actually move behind a terrible O-line, whereas Russell isn't fast enough to scramble well behind that aforementioned terrible O-line... And Vick is used to having subpar receivers... Or maybe they just look subpar because they're playing with JMarc, like Manning is making superstars of those two cats I can't name.

I agree with this. But who says you can't throw out of the formation? And who says Vick lining up in a Shotgun absolutely has to be "Wildcat"? Can't Vick just take a snap out of the QB spot and throw or run as needed?

Not that the Eagles should be wasting their time trying to get him involved right now when they are in the thick of a division race, just saying that there are other ways to effectively utilize him and I don't think the Eagles have fully realized them.

Perhaps Vick will move on to a new team and find a more ideal situation.

I agree he doesn't look as fast or explosive. Prison time can do that to you though. I'd imagine he's still getting his confidence back as well since the long layoff.

I agree with your last point too, Philly isn't a great situation for him at the moment.
