Giants in the Super Bowl
Sandy Alderson and company FINALLY decided to bite the $6 million bullet as they announced the release of second baseman Luis Castillo.
The Mets have had a 2B competition all spring long and sadly, nobody has separated themselves from the pack.
As of now, it appears the leading candidate to win the job is rule 5 pick BRad Emaus, formerly of the Blue Jays. J.P. Ricciardi is a supporter and he walks more.
Daniel Murphy is an option but he will likely be more of a utility guy who can play 1B, 2B and 3B. He's still new to second so I don't expect him to win the job outright. He's a lefty bat which is a big reason why he'll stay around.
According to Adam Rubin, Justin Turner has had a good spring but he has options which allow him to be moved to the minors without the risk of losing him. Plus Luis Hernandez has a slim spot to win the job because he strikes out too much.
Castillo was acquired by the Mets from Minnesota the day before the 2007 trade deadline, in the final year of his contract. Then GM Omar Minaya RESIGNED Castillo to a FOUR YEAR, 25-MILLION DOLLAR DEAL. Nearly everyone panned the decision to offer Castillo such much money over such a long contract.
Orlando Hudson reportedly wanted to sign with the Mets when he became a free agent in 2009 but obviously, the Mets had no room and he ended up signing with the Dodgers....and then with Minnesota in 2010.
Castillo had a good year offensively in 2009 with a .302/.387 BA/OBP, 77 Runs, 20 Steals, 69 Walks. Of course, his defense was nothing to write home about by that point and he was viewed by Mets fans as a symbol of the non-contending teams and bad decisions by Minaya.
Heard it put this way on the radio before and it's perfectly put....while Castillo was average at best and okay at worst, Mets fans disliked him because his presence prevented the team from bringing in a better player (such as Hudson or David Eckstein).
:wavey: Castillo
