Someone's theory about what the cover represents on reddit.

WTT and Cruel Summer all had golden plates with rich illustrations as covers, they served as a symbol of Kanye's (And Jay's, in WTT's case) power, they had money, women, all someone could wish for. But now that Kanye's sick of that, he smashed the golden plate and this cover was the result. If you ask me, if my theory's true, the cover fits the theme of the album.
