What is a Compression Offense?

I've been hearing talks at other madden sites about the Compression offense for a while, but I've never seen it really explained. Does the offense really work that well?

My best guess would be that it's an offense that used compressed sets.

And what is that?

like singleback tight flex you remember that set? its 3wr and 1 te all lined up all along the line with no space between the offensive line and the receivers

This is the singleback tight flex that the titans used to have on madden, an example of a compression set.


See how 3 wrs and 1 te are all bunched with the offensive line and arent split out wide

some more examples would be the Seattle playbook which as had Near and Far sets where all the players are bunched up and nobody is really split out wide

Oh ok, so you basically run compression sets to easily tell if the opponent is in man or zone and then hot route accordingly?

yes it is definitely easier to tell if they are in man or zone by doing things like calling compression sets or calling twin sets.


On PS2 I would use Man lock feature on D though were my guys froze in the original formation so you couldnt tell if i were in man or zone, they havent implemented this on Next gen yet though.
