    PS2 Outsells PS3

Mired in an overall slump, the once recession-proof video game industry is finally experiencing some adverse effects from the troubled economy.

Just ask Sony. The games giant saw losses pretty much across the board in the year's first quarter, as sales of its flagship Playstation 3 system fell from last year's 1.6 million to only 1.1 million. Its PSP handheld saw a huge drop, too, from 3.7 million to only 1.2 million.

The one bright spot? The nine year-old Playstation 2, which managed to outsell the PS3 by roughly 500,000 units despite being older than some of its fans.

Part of the system's continued success can be attributed to the ailing economy. At only $99, it's a significantly cheaper alternative to the entry-level Xbox 360 ($199) and Nintendo Wii ($250), not to mention the still inordinately pricey Playstation 3 ($399). Adding bang to the buck is the system's massive library of highly-rated, value-priced games, which includes seminal titles from huge franchises like Grand Theft Auto, God of War and Final Fantasy. The PS2 also boasts the ability to play DVDs, which, despite Sony's efforts to promote its hi-def Blu-Ray technology, remains the industry's leading format (though video game sales outperformed both in 2008).

Unfortunately, software sales for all three Sony systems took a serious tumble, with PS3 games suffering a decline from 22.8 million last year to 14.8 million this year. However, the company has also noted that they've managed to reduce the production costs of the console by about 70%. Could consumers soon reap the benefits of those savings in the form of a long-awaited PS3 price cut?

rofl, im not really surprised. the ps3 is so expensive, and the ps2 has all the great games that u need

You're surprised that the only console on the market that comes built in with a blu ray player is expensive? Its much more than just a console so its going to cost more.

The Ps2 is just like the 360 when parents are buying the video game consoles for their kids they are going to buy the cheaper one most of the time.

I just hate how the PS3 is so much, if i had the money i would buy one, but i dont see how u can compare sales between the ps2 and ps3 when the ps3 has so much more than a ps2.

Or the ones their kids ask for that is. You can't compare the PS2 to the 360 because it's a hell of a lot cheaper. A PS2 is $60, the cheapest 360 is $200. If what you are saying is the case, then PS2 would have outsold the 360 as well, something that hasn't happened since 2006 I believe.

Because the goal in mind is to surpass what your previous console did. When you are still getting your ass kicked by your previous console three or four years in, I think it's easy to make the comparison.

Companies still make games for the ps2, the first microsoft console was basically put on life support when the 2nd one came out. I know my little cousin wanted a 360 or ps3 for christmas last year and his cheap ass mom bought him a ps2, niiiiiiice.

The last part still doesn't explain the fact that the 360 outsells the PS2 which outsells the PS3.

For the first part, Original Xbox games were released until Madden 09, which was August of 2008. 360 has consistently outsold the PS2, PS3, and Original Xbox since 2006.

Same thing as it always is in this argument... market share PS2 came out a year before the original xbox and dominated sales, although most would argue xbox was the technically superior system.

360 came out a year before ps3 and dropped their price when the ps3 came out so they have the lion's share of the market. The higher price of the ps3 due to have a 1080p blu ray player built in drives the average person away from it.

360 is the best, no doubt. but 90% of all houses have a DVD player anyways. so y buy a ps3? it's a little better than the 360, but it also costs around 100 dollars more. and if u already have a dvd player, that 100 extra dollars is a complete waste

Its a matter of choice i guess, i dont see why anyone would have a HDTV and watch DVDs on it when you could be watching beautiful blu rays on it. I think watching Planet Earth on BluRay was worth the purchase price of my ps3 alone. Then again guys at work told me i was an "electronics snob" because we went to one Buffalo Wild Wings for lunch and they had all SDTVs and i was unhappy.

                    I prefer CDs over tapes
                    I prefer BluRay over DVD
I prefer Pepsi over Sams Club Soda

TRUST ME if the 360 didnt have such a bad rap with the failure rates i wouldve likely bought that instead of the ps3 back in November 2006.

You do realize that the PS3 has a Blu Ray player, right? Blu Ray is better than DVD hands down. If you have a high def TV, you'd be robbing yourself if you weren't watching movies in high def.

While I have a 360, its troubling hardware issues hardly make it "the best, no doubt."

Hell, if a game is cross-platform, I almost always buy it for the ps3 ... because I know I won't have to worry about the red lights of death.

And Jack Bauer Jr. is right - Blu-ray is an awesome format.

The PS2 has been outselling the PS3 nearly every month since the system launched, so this is no big surprise.

My PS3 is awesome for Blu-Ray movies and exclusive titles...but that's about it. All multi-platform games go to the 360. I wouldn't trade my PS3 for anything, but if I had to choose just one, it would definitely be the 360.
