I need help running the ball

I've always been pretty weak at running the ball in football games. I have no idea why. I remember not being able to run at all in NFL 2K5 and All Pro 2K8 but other players being able to stuff the ball down my throat with the rush.

Madden 09 was almost the breaking point. I use the Bears and Forte is a great back. I was lucking to average 2 yards a carry! Versus the computer on All-Pro!

Now with Madden 10 I dropped the difficulty down to Pro and I still can't run worth a shit.

It was really evident in a league game I just played. My opponent was the Packers and he just was killing me with Ryan Grant. He ended up with about 150 yards rushing. As I'm watching him run I'm seeing holes open up and his blockers pushing me all over the field. But as soon as I get the ball there are no holes and when there are they close up in a split. But most of the time I'm getting pummeled as soon as I get the ball or some defender streaks in from behind to hit me before I can get going. I know the Bears have a decent O-line.

I know what most are going to say, "Don't hit turbo until you see the hole." Trust me, I know that.

What am I doing wrong? Are there certain buttons I should be pushing? What am I missing?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Could it be that I'm just too aggressive on the left stick? (I know that sounds funny. LOL) I'm testing practice mode and I'm barely moving the runner with the stick and it seems to be making a significant difference.

Could it be something as simple as that?

I think I'm done with this game. I don't know what the deal is. I watch and just see my o-line whiff blocks left and right. The defense is in the backfield as soon as my RB touches the ball. I've tried everything. Even when it looks like my blockers outnumber the defense on a sweep play somehow one guy will shed a block and get me after a yard gain.I could run TEN passing plays in a row and then try one running play and get stuffed. I just finished a game as the Bears vs the Packers and Forte averaged 1.2 yards per carry! 29 attempts for 37 FUCKING YARDS! Are you fucking kidding me?!?

And don't even get me started on that suction animation bullshit where your runner basically runs in place until the fat ass defensive lineman catches up to him and dives for the tackle.

And I love having my QB tackles before even handing the ball of...multiple times in one game!
I wish I had a capture card so that I could post video. It's an absolute joke hoe the defense reacts to quickly and seems to shed every block.

Edit: I played my buddy the other day while he visited. He just bought Madden but the last one he owned was 96. I beat him by ONE point because I could not run the ball. Afterwards I booted up a game vs the computer and asked him to watch me run the ball to see if he noticed anything. The only thing he said was "Your blockers suck." Now I know the Bears have a good o-line and I know my games isn't broken. WHAT THE FUCK IS THE DEAL???

Try running up inside the tackles to get your run game going, getting 3-4 yards by following your FB through the hole is a great way to get your run game rolling, then once you've worn down the defense a little its easier to get to the outside and start breaking off some bigger runs.

I've tried that too. But somehow a defender gets in after the FB. And the thing that really kills me is that Forte goes down after one hit most of the time yet the CPU RB's break tackle after tackle. But when I throw to Forte in the flat he usually breaks a few tackles. It makes no sense.

I set up the run with the first play of the game.

              1. Run outside - Here I will start with single back two TE formation. I will do a toss outside after motioning one of the TE to where the play is goin for extra blocking. Success is if the gain is 3-4 yards. Then a playaction or an inside run and off we go.

              2. Run inside - Standard run inside like HB dive or blast or ISO depends on the formation. If that gets stoned than I know I can run a screen or pass to loosen it up.

              3. Pass - I will playaction or pass from a formation that has FB/TE/2 TE. This way the CPU might get fooled into thinking pass the next time I call up the same formation.

CPU or Human my MO stays the same.

I'll keep that in mind Blade. Thanks for the tips. I need all I can get,

It's a shame too because this years games is the most fun I've had with Madden in ages. I just can't run to save my life.

Rinse and repeat man. I follow that almost every first down. The running game is tough this year. I can get a 90 to 100 yards almost every game. The thing is not to give up on it. 50 of those yards I was talkin about usually come on one HUGE gain. So keep plugging away be patient while you are lookin for daylight.

Use the most beastly running team(Vikings IMO) against the worst Run D and build up your confidence. If that fails just put the game down, I never have problem running I just don't do it enough.

BTW I average almost 200 yds rushing every game. Between Westbrook/McCoy, Weaver, McNabb and I signed Dunn since Westy broke his wrist. But running game has a whole gets pretty close to that. McNabb will get about 20 some yards per game on scrambles. My primary RB will average around 100 +/- 10 yds every time. Weaver gets about 30 yds per, because of inside runs. Westy has had one 211 yard game, and that was my OT game against the Cowgirls.

Oh ya, fast big backs like AP will give you 200 a game.
