Its from the replay mode, which is done in real time, but I think the replay mode they add video effects, but the game does run at nearly 60 fps consistently...I don't think it ever drops below 55.
IMO, even in Prologue there are certain times in replay mode that it looks photorealistic. They are just completely anal about their car modelling and track modelling.
I read an interview a while back from Kaz about track modelling and he was talking about how all the trees are in the exact location of their real life counterpart...this is important imo because I used to work in Champ Car (now IndyCar) and I know that specifically at Laguna Seca the drivers would key into a certain tree off in the distance to line up the car to turn into the blind corkscrew turn (which is competely badass irl)
