    Madden Arcade.

    From 1UP.com

On a recent episode of Listen Up, the crew speculated that the massive sales for Battlefield 1943 would serve as a green light to EA for digital distribution -- especially for their yearly-iterated sports franchises. We may be seeing the seeds of that starting now, as Gamespot reports that EA Sports will be releasing Madden Arcade this fall. "Earlier this year, we took the award-winning NHL game energy and developed [NHL] 3 on 3 Arcade," said Peter Moore in a conference call. "It was simple to pick up and play at launch as a fully downloadable game. We will follow this approach with Madden Arcade later this year."
From the sounds of it, Madden Arcade will be a slightly stripped down version of the main game. Moore didn't mention platforms for the game, but given the distribution model Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 seem likely. The most compelling remaining question, though, is price. The gaming community has been vocal in the past about purchasing a new $60 Madden title every year, so Madden Arcade could be an opportunity to give players a price break and even a discount on next year's iteration. Given the name recognition, this could even sell higher than Battlefield 1943 -- if the price is right.

Just the final excuse to continue to put out a crappy game, cause they've ran out of everything else.

huh? madden arcade has nothing to do with madden 10, did u read that at all?

Anyway i dunno i could go either way on this, NHL arcade was a huge success so if it was done right i don't see why a madden arcade couldnt be just as good. By the same token it's pretty unnecessary.

        Preview from 1UP.com

The 20 year old Madden series is known for its realistic simulation style NFL football, TV broadcast presentation, and the musings from now-retired 'tough actin' Tinactin pitchman John Madden's about things like "the team with the most points usually wins the game." EA Tiburon has decided to forgo those staples in favor of an arcadey pick-up-and-play approach with this upcoming downloadable release, aptly titled Madden NFL Arcade. While not the first foray into the arcade football space for Tiburon (they've got NFL Street and NFL Tour under their belts), it is the first to use the mighty Madden name.

Madden NFL Arcade has you playing with five of the 'best' players from each of the 32 teams in the league in matches that are intended to take no more than 10 minutes; clocks have been thrown out entirely, as the game embraces a backyard 'first one to score X number of points wins' pace. Also, shortening the field to 60 yards, completely eliminating first downs to make way for 4-plays-to-score possessions, turning field goals into free points, and doing away with penalties and injuries round out the major changes to the pigskin action here. This is a Madden game, though, so some elements of pro football are still present -- though these are mostly cosmetic.

For everything that Arcade has removed from the game of football, something unique to this title is there in its place. EA Tiburon has brought over a new super-deformed art style for the player models, and each player type (Quarterback, Wide Receiver, Linebacker, etc.) is visibly different. While the uniforms are the primary differences between players' appearances, some do retain their unique quirks, such as Chargers running back Ladanian Tomlinson's dark visor. There are two control types to choose from before starting a match: arcade and standard. Standard control keeps the button layout of traditional Madden football, from Hit Sticks to jukes and spins, while arcade simplifies everything and maps those jukes, spins, and other context sensitive moves to the controller's face buttons. Selecting plays on both sides of the ball is pretty straightforward; on offense you choose between running the ball, a short pass, a medium pass, or a long pass. And likewise on defense; you select from a blitz, close cover, medium cover, and, you guessed it, deep cover (picking a deep cover defensive play spells certain doom for you if your opponent has selected a run play).

What looks to be the bread and butter of this release are the gameplay mods you enable both at the beginning of a game and that you receive while out on the field. Before you start a game you are given the option to turn on any number of mods that change various aspects; each of these cleverly named mods has a different effect that remains active throughout the entire game. Fumble-itis, for example, makes it so that as soon as the ball carrier is touched by an opposing player he immediately fumbles it, encouraging you to play the game more carefully to avoid any contact. These same mods become available throughout the game and are activated through a quick button-press, but they're only effective for one play.

I played as the Philadelphia Eagles during my time with the game and noticed that Donovan McNabb, who just recently returned as the starter after being injured, was selected as quarterback; I was told that while updatable rosters are supported they'll be limited to personnel changes and trades as opposed to following the minute details of injuries. Games went by quickly and the in-game perks kept them interesting throughout. Playing against someone who wasn't even that big of a sports gamer was still a challenge, as the arcade style controls kept him on the same playing field as me, an avid Madden player.

Madden NFL Arcade is a nice change of pace from the gritty realism of the Madden series proper, with its big NFL Blitz style hits, a flashy look, and party game feel. EA Tiburon's aiming for a winter release, so if you're looking for pro football with a twist, keep an eye out on PSN and XBLA for this one.

The downloadable only title Madden Arcade now has an official release date. It will be out on Tuesday November 24th on PSN and Wednesday November 25th on XBLA. It had been originally planned to make its way out in December. Madden Arcade will go for 1200 MS points for the 360 and the equivalent $15 for the PS3.

EA Sports has shifted their arcade titles to this method of downloadable only delivery, providing compact offerings at much more reasonable prices than would’ve been found at retail. 3 on 3 NHL Arcade was the first attempt at it and by all accounts it was a nice success.

With the debut of Madden Arcade next week (Tues for PS3 and Wed for 360) EA Sports is releasing some final details on the game. The latest are the descriptions of all the power-ups which are being called “Game Changers”. Teams have the opportunity of being awarded one before every play and can choose to use it right then or save it for later. There are some new screenshots in the gallery showing off a few of them in action.

As I speculated when the full rosters for the game were released the “entourage” of extra lineman is related to one of the power-ups. Continue on for the full list of game changers and leave your thoughts in the comments.

Entourage – Bring in the reinforcements as Entourage sends the rest of your lineman into the game to help out for a play.

Triple Threat – Disguise which receiver you’re throwing the ball by sending out two other decoys with the Power Ball game changer.

Bonus Play – Give yourself an additional down to help get in the end zone and earn some much deserved points with Bonus Play.

Make it, Take it - If you’re good enough to score when you trigger Make It, Take It, the ball is yours to keep on the next possession.

Turbo – The Turbo game changer will send players in fast forward by giving them an extra speed burst.

Molasses – Game too fast for you? Use Molasses to take down the action on the field to a less frantic pace.

Fumbilitis – Turn your opponent’s into butter fingers as they’ll have a difficult time holding on to the ball with Fumbilitis.

It’s Alive – Make any pass a scramble for the ball as its Alive will turn any incomplete pass into a live ball.

Frostbite – Put the freeze on one opposing player from moving by using the game changer Frostbite.

Fast Pass – Fast Pass gives the power to a QB to throw the ultimate bulleted pass.

Flying Blind – Sabotage your opponent by using Flying Blind to turn off their passing icons.

Flip Flop – Jealous of your opponents score? Flip Flop will nicely borrow the score and never give it back.

Dud – Hey, they can’t all be winners.

Has anybody played this game yet? I downloaded the game and played it this morning. If you were a fan of the old NFL Street series back on the PS2 and Xbox, I think you will enjoy it. It's something you won't spend hours and hours playing but if you are in the mood for a quick football game, this will do. It is what it is, an acrade game. It doesn't try to be anything more than that.

I think the younger crowd will get more out of it than guys our age. If you have some extra MS points to burn like I did, I would say go for it. I bought a 1600 points card a long time ago and hadn't found anything I wanted to buy with them. If not, this is something you can live without

I think I might get it to play with my brother, from what I could tell from the trial version its just a simplified NFL Street.

                            I bought this.

Sadly, I think it's more fun than Madden 10.

Frankly I think the online ps3 guys would have more fun with this than Madden 10.
