If your DVR or cable box has a USB port on it, you can always use that as well. That way I always have a fully charged controller ready to go.

question, why does my cable box have a usb port? What else can I do with this nifty discovery...

A lot of them were designed to support an external USB hard drive to either add space to your existing DVR storage or archive older content that you want to save.

O rly? If thats the case I need to figure out how to do that shit, it would be alot better than me going to jail for dling some of the show/movies I do...specially since Im paying for all these movie channels... I'm guessing that they are in some special format that will only play on my dvr box though right?

It wouldn't help you record or playback any content that your cable box isn't authorized to receive and it would likely store it in a proprietary format that would just work on any DVR.

wouldn't expect it to record anything I couldn't record, just would be nice to be able to keep things without filling up my dvr, thanks for the info, sold me on getting an external hard drive, I was needing one for awhile just didn't have a good enough excuse to spend the money...

So essentially what you guys are saying is you could transfer a recorded show/movie to your external hard drive to store extra space or let's say you go over to a friends house with the external HD, you plug it in and you could play it on theirs? Am I getting that right?
