    [PS3] PS3 Hacked???

That's the word that has been going around the last few days. All you need is a USB modchip.

digg_url = 'http://digg.com/playstation/PS3_modchip_claims_to_finally_allow_backing_up_games_without'; Who needs George Hotz anyway? A USB modchip for the PS3 has emerged from the mists this morning, purporting to allow the dumping of games onto nearby storage -- the console's internal HDD and external drives are both a-ok -- as well as the subsequent playing of said games without the need for the original disc. Could it be the backup/piracy nirvana Sony loyalists have been awaiting for so long? Well, there's a video showing the little USB device apparently working, and the PSX-Scene team say they have personally verified that it does what it claims to do, but skepticism remains advisable here. The PS3 has been a fortress of hacker unfriendliness, so we'd rather kick back, relax, and wait for some braver souls than us to do the testing. For now, the video awaits after the break. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

PSX-scene is confirming this as real. I imagine once these are released, you can get your hands on the code and put it on your own thumb drive. this would kinda be great bc you could easily use it for offline games without being detected.

It was only a matter of time. Hats off to Sony for having a console that was secure as long as it was.

The rumored price is 170 AUS or $153 US.

If it does what it says it does I might waste a few bucks on it.

After reading more... currently it only supports FAT32... filesize limit is like 4gb.. so really until NTFS is supported you won't even be able to load new games which are larger in sizes.

                  PS3 Hack Has Been Confirmed!

                  Information so far:

Well there has been a USB dongle hack for the PS3. This is very controversial because only two people have really confirmed it but these two people are very respected members of the PSX scene moding community. The two sites backing the claim are

                  Code:
                  http://psx-scene.com/
                  Code:
                  http://ozmodchips.com/
The USB Dongle is meant to allow you to run PS3 games straight from the HD. It lets you rip them to the HD and the play them from it. You can do this from a USB Dongle with an application on it called "Backup Manager" The USB Dongle should also allow you to run unsigned code so can anyone say HOMEBREW! It essentially turns your PS3 into a Dev-Kit. The product in question has been shipped to a few modding websites for review and the company is based in Hong Kong.

PSX-SCENE is the first any ONLY website to CONFIRM that this product is working 100% Not by speculation but by being the only website to actually have testers with actual product in hand! We will have a video courtesy of OzModchips soon so stay tuned!!!

I have been in contact directly with the manufacturer and can confirm some things you have all been asking about...

                  1. FAT32 is currently supported. They are working on NTFS.

                  2. They recommend staying on current firmware and not updating until they have deemed it safe. The dongle is fully updatable.

                  3. Online play does work but they cannot guarantee that it will work with all future titles.

                  4. Final retail units are ready to ship.

                  5. Official reseller list will be on their site in the next 48 hours. You can pre-order from any of the official resellers. There are websites out there now claiming to be selling but they are not legitimate. Don't get ripped off. Wait until the official list is posted.

                      you knew that was coming..

having a modded xbox last year and gettin nearly 100+ games for free and making alot of money on the side doing it, i can say it was deff worth it.

as for the PS3, unless they find a way to load them off your hd or a external hd connected to your ps3, the price of blank dual layer blue rays is deff not worth it.

                          PS3 Firmware (v3.42) Update
The next system software update for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system will be released on August 19, 2010 (JST), and will disable the USB ports that are available on all PS3 systems, launched in November 2006. Due to security concerns, Sony Computer Entertainment will remove the functionality through the 3.42 system software update.
In addition, disabling the USB ports will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system.
                          Consumers and organizations that currently use the USB ports can choose not to upgrade their PS3 systems, although the following features will no longer be available;
                          * Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat
                          * Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.42 or later
                          * Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings)
                          * Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.42 or later
Additional information about PS3 firmware updates, including v3.42 (once it becomes available), can be found here: http://us.playstation.com/support/sy.../ps3/index.htm

though it would be pretty bad if they didn't even do that.
