    [PS3] Happy 15 Sony PlayStation

Sony's game-changing platform celebrates a decade and a half on the North American market; 2 billion PS family games sold; $63 billion in sales.

Some 15 years ago today, the original PlayStation went on sale in North America. Though it had Sony behind it--a brand revered in electronics circles--the console was no sure thing. It had, in fact, been created almost by accident, after a proposed deal between Sony and Nintendo fell apart famously in 1991.

At that year's Consumer Electronics Show, Sony announced it had struck a deal with the Mario Factory to provide the SNES with a CD-based game-media reader. The following day, though, Nintendo announced it was opting to have Netherlands-based Phillips make the peripheral, forging one of the more bitter rivalries in game-industry history.

The PlayStation 3 has lagged behind Nintendo in the current generation of consoles, with Wii sales topping 74 million worldwide versus just 38.1 million PlayStation 3s sold. The original PlayStation had sold over 102 million units as of mid-2005, and the PlayStation 2 had sold over 145 million as of July 2010.

However, Sony was not shy about using the PlayStation brand's anniversary to throw around its platforms' impressive statistics. To date, PlayStation-branded hardware--including the original PlayStation, PS2, PSP, and PS3--has sold some 377 million hardware units and over 2 billion software units worldwide. In the US, some $63 billion of PlayStation-branded products have been sold since 1995, comprising 40 percent of all domestic game sales, according to Sony.

To commemorate the North American anniversary of the PlayStation--which first went on sale in Japan in December 1994--Sony is releasing a series of free PSP and PS3 themes, as well as weekly discounts on PS One digital downloads from the PlayStation Network.

15 years ago I drove from my apartment in Goose Creek, SC to the Citadel Mall in Charleston, walked into the electronics store and picked up a Sony Playstation along with Ridge Racer and NBA Jam. All of this occuring in the late morning/early afternoon with little to no hype. Now you couldn't get a new console unless you were camping out for a few days or overpay out of the ass.

I've never camped out for a console but I remember two of my cousins camped out for the PS2.

I wish they would announce what games were going on sale. Of course I think I've bought all the PS1 classics I want anyway.

I also wish they would at least release the other Twisted Metal games. I think only 2 is on there?

It was serious business...I witnessed a Wal-mart employee get fired because the manager wanted to do a lottery and she stood up for the people that had waited all day.

She was calling all the local news stations wanting a story about how she had been wrongfully fired blah blah blah it was awesome

I remember getting the old brick PS2 back when GTAIII was released... shit was magical.

Brought me and my Pop closer together because we played the shit out of that game everyday after I got out of school and he got off of work.

Now he's got his gaming rig PC and I've got my PS3 but we still look back to gunning down Old Salvatore with a little mist in the eyes.

I was over my grandparents and my cousins boyfriend brought out the PSX along with ridge racer. Next day I went out and got the Sony NHL Faceoff 98 game.

Who else remembers NFL Gameday and NCAA Gamebreaker? I remember where if you had a big hit lighting thunder and lighting would strike during rain games. Also, I tghink you could only get INT's after a hard hit that jarred the ball loose.

I wouldn't mind seeing the Syphon Filter games on sale. I have the first one but not 2 or 3. I loved those games. Gabe Logan is a B.A.M.F.

Gameday was the best football game for a while.

Syphon Filter was sweet. I had a lot of fun playing that one as a kid, but the controls are atrocious compared to today's standards.

That's because I believe you had to use the d-pad. I think the first SF came out before the first dual shock. Plus it was before it was the norm to use the shoulder buttons.

Aside from the free themes for either your PSP or PS3, they've set up downloadable copies of "Super-Rub-A-Dub" (and separate demo) as well as this...:

Translated (to my knowledge) and ready for download for $3.

It's not Suikoden 2 but for three bucks, you can't do worse for your old school RPG'ing dollar.
