[PC] Civilization V

Anybody else get this. I just started playing tonight after work but I'm loving the change to the hexagonal tiles and not being able to stack units. Makes the strategy of warfare even more important.

Playing online is a bit daunting but I've had some good games that went on for weeks with friends on previous versions. Let me know if you want to give it a try. It's like big boy Risk.

I made a thread like a month ago and got no replies lol. I'm still on the fence as far as buying it, it looks great just not sure how much time I'll have to play it.

One thing that people are complaining about - it REQUIRES a connection to steam. You can't play it offline!

They completely revamped culture to Policy, which gives you various bonuses. You can also buy the land around your city instead of waiting for the culture to spread. Great people are used very differently; most can build something outside of the city. The great artist actualy has a "culture bomb" trait that you can use - go into any of your own land, culture bomb, and any surrounding land is yours, including anything owned by opponents.

City States, though, are the biggest change. They're non-player civs. You can ally with them, take them over, whatever. I declared war on... Germany, I think it was, and 4 city-states that I was allied with declared war against them, too.

I hate that shit. Almost every 3rd party game that goes to steam has that same problem until they get off their asses to "update it due to community response".

Maxis the creators of the original sim city are too busy wasting their time trying to make spore expansions and milking the cow that is the sims franchise.

the new civilization is very, very good. its not like other games in the series. you really play more of a superpower nation, than you do some massive world consumping empire in previous games. you have to be dedicated in your choices and stick to the game play because everything builds real slow until the industrial revolution. combat gets really awesome in the later eras right about the time city expansion is more or less on auto pilot.

if you're on the fence, get it, it's worth your time.

I'm more of an RTS guy, I think Rise of Nations is still the best historical game out there.

I have Civ 4 that I played for awhile, and just stopped playing. I should really crack that open again, as I loved it.

so after playing extensively - working 40 hours a week again, so extensively aint what it used to be - with probably half my free time or so, i really think the game is a gem.

i think my major attraction to the civilization series - and i have played it since the very first game, one of my first pc games ever - is the history nerd inside of me. i would flunk math and get a+ in history. that's just how i rolled in school. and civ 5 gets it as close to real civilization as it can happen in a randomly generated world.

i play usually with 10 other ai's - i add one - on a second-to-largest map and i crank the city states to 28. basically. theres lots of "npc" players in the game to interact with. city states are not trying to win the game, they are just one city that give you their resources and a bonus of some sort to you. city states make the game interesting. in one game - and telling civilization stories is almost as boring as telling poker stories, it's not cool unless it was you that did it, but - i was smashing the arab's, and while i was doing so, egypt declared war on dublin at the other end of my civilization, and dublin was a big deal to me because they were a military state that gave me free units all the time so i could focus on building other shit. plus, they were the city state inbetween me and egypt, so it was important for me to have them as a roadblock and a staging area so egypt doesnt fuck with me. so i immediately took peace from the arabs and ran back down there.

theres more to this game than previous civs where you pretty much werent playing right if you werent housing other civs as soon as you got the chance to, so you'd pick fights all the time just because you could. city states compensate for whatever it is you arent doing and add to what you are, while providing you with resources that you dont have any of and a foothold against your enemies. it feels amazing to lead THE COALITION OF THE WILLING, SON. Gulf War 1... Saddam Hussein invades friendly city state of kuwait. america goes in and restores the original government. theres lots of events that can be explained in civ 5 terms like that. that makes for a really amazing computer game

Just purchased this finally thanks to the Steam sale, enjoying the crap out of it so far. Granted, I'm only 100 turns in on a LAN game with my friend. Anyone here still play? I think JeremyHight does but anyone else?
