[PS3] PS3 Netflix going disc free in 4 days, 1080i/5.1 Surround

    MS's contract with netflix expiring

Rejoice, PS3 owners, your Netflix streaming experience just got vastly better than anything else on the market. Starting October 18 Netflix on the PS3 will no longer require a disc, and it'll stream some content with 1080i 1080p resolution and / or 5.1-channel surround audio, while everyone else will be stuck with a max of 720p stereo for the time being. Oh, and you'll get subtitles on some content as well. Netflix is partnering with Dolby on the audio side, and the surround format will be Dolby Digital Plus, which is the same codec used by the VUDU HDX streaming service -- we're guessing it'll require a tiny bit more bandwidth but the results should sound pretty great. Netflix says 5.1 will come to other platforms "over time," so we'll see how long that takes -- and given that the PS3 is now disc-free and the company's eschewed the SRS surround features baked into its Silverlight-based platform, we're guessing Microsoft's exclusivity period has now completely run its course. Video and PR after the break. Update: Though the official PlayStation Blog originally reported the service would display streaming video at 1080i resolution, they've since struck that out -- they say it'll do 1080p now. Much better.

Playstation Blog just updated saying there will be some things in 1080p.

There is even more good news for PS3 owners: starting on Monday you’ll be able to instantly watch some movies and TV shows in 1080p high definition, listen to Dolby 5.1 channel surround sound, and view an increasing portion of our content library with subtitles. This will bring the home theater experience right to your living room and make instantly watching movies even more enjoyable. Here’s a news release from Netflix and Dolby with details.

In addition to eliminating the disc, there is a new user [...]

Hopefully the interface is much better than it was with the disc.

I don't think the one with the disc is bad at all. I actually like how it is set up.

Go to the Playstation blog and look at the video. It won't let me embed it. Look at the video to take a look at the new interface

Looks like 1080p is a typo, because in the vid he also says 1080i

The vid was recorded before they received the new update fore the Netflix App. The 1st comment on the blog he corrected himself saying that 1080p will be available. They didn't know until today that the new update would allow 1080p streaming
