    [ALL] LCD or LED?

So the silly season is upon us and that means tons and tons of deals on TV. I feel like my TV at this point is pretty outdated, I picked up a Samsung LCD LNS4051D back in Winter 2006 when it first came out. It was one of the better ones, and expensive because it was new.

The thing is its also outdated tech wise, I only have 1 component input, 2 HDMI and a PC input. Its also only 720p but it handles 1080i very well. I also paid a shit ton for it back then, but the money's been worth it. I will probably end up passing it on to my parents.

So I know what I am looking for now, 1080p, atleast 3 HDMIs, 2 component, atleast 120hz refresh rate. I don't want a plasma, I move a lot, so I don't want to deal with the weight, I also find LCDs easier to handle and more energy conserving and have less glare. I love Samsung and Sony TVs, but I am open to other brands if they are proven.

My question to you guys is how do LED TVs fare when it comes to video games and sports too? I have heard that LED have issues with video game projection, but I don't see how. I am sure some of you guys have them so please sound off!

Or should I get another LCD?

LEDs I believe still have a pretty long time lag in regards to gaming.

So if it's going to be for gaming I'd probably go LCD.

if there isnt anything wrong with your LCD, why bother?? unless; you have money burn of course....... :D
3rd & 14, inside your own 15, up 6, 3:20min left to go = call a PA Pass and Cancel. *its Legit, so no needless complaining

I would go with LCD for gaming....LED does make everything look real world like even stuff in SD. I would stay away from Samsung because they seem to last only 3 years before they start to have problem. I like my plasma but since weight is a concern, I would go with LG LCD. This is just my personal opinion.

Ive got a Samsung 46inch LED Backlit LCD. Its one of Samsungs super slim models. Great for gaming. and a nice 4 year warranty on it in case anything goes wrong. Only thing I regret is that its 3D and I haven't even used the feature yet. I probably could have saved 300 or 400 without that option but whatever.

That has also been my understanding that the LED TV's have up to 120ms response time which is awful

Which is a shame because they are great looking TVs with great pictures but if you can't game on them what the hell is the point haha.

Always LED if you can afford it. Incredibly long life in those LED lights. Dont know about gaming, but value wise, go LED.

120? On average LCDs have 4. I dont think LEDs would have 116 ms more response time.

I'm pretty sure most LEDs have around 2ms at the moment.

120hz and above LCDs have soap opera effect which can ruin alot of movies. Make sure whatever you get has an option to turn that off.

Narrow your price range/size options to about 2-4 sets. Then check amazon and AVSFORUM for potential issues with those particular models.

PQ really wont vary too much with top name brands in same price range. Dont be fooled by what you see in the store. Source material and settings vary so much in store its almost impossible to get a good idea of how it will look when you get home.

HDMI inputs , DLNA , THX options etc whatever specifics your looking at should all be there with any set.

Lag is already bad with LCD but LEDs are even worse. Thats where model research on AVSFORUM will come in handy.

P.S its not just the response time. The video processing for certain sets varies greatly and the "label" numbers dont always tell the whole truth about how bad input lag will be.

What do you mean Soap Opera effect? And can you explain more about input lag?

Its VERY difficult to explain without showing someone. When you watch "film" i.e Terminator or Titanic the resulting image looks like "video".
It feels like your watching behind the scenes footage.
Good for news and porn but not good for movies.

Id recommend going to BB and looking at a plasma and lcd ((120hz or more)) side by side.

ms Response time/refresh time is just how long it takes the pixel to refresh to a new color or state. Video processing is the actual handling of the video information and running it through the 120hz doubling , and other video features your set may have. This ends up with an increase in response time. People think its just the little trails old lcds used to have. But its literally like online lag ((just nowhere near as bad but the premise is)).

Sorry If im skipping or being unclear Im headed out of work. Ill post more later if you need.

So the soap opera effect is like when the PQ looks grainy? Cause I put in Titanic the other day and it was grainy and the picture was in surrounded by black bars all around.
