Interview with the GM of DICE.

I don't think it has been mentioned yet, but DICE is aiming for a 12 hour single player campaign. That should definitely be enough to satisfy you SP guys.

                fuck me...

good thing I only paid $10 for it. I guess in 2006 this was cool shit, but now, it's really bad. So, I need to pick up BF BC 2 if I want a good "fill in" for a CoD type game (which, BTW, I finally played Black Ops a couple weeks ago and it's not a bad game)?

Bad Company 2 is a bit different from CoD in terms of play style. Be sure to buy it new to take advantage of all the "free" DLC.

is it like, or better than, BF BC (one with the smiley face on cover)? I still have that demo on my 360 and thought that was interesting, never enough to buy it though. I can see where it is different than CoD.

It's a much improved version of the first game, at least online. SP has little going for it.

Link: Battlefield 3 to 'Take Down' Call of Duty with Over $100 Million in Marketing

Battlefield 3 and the Frostbite engine looked quite impressive during the game's GDC debut, and publisher Electronic Arts has made it known for some time now that they won't stop fighting until they've taken back the shooter crown from rival Activision. Talking to a group of marketers at the Ad Age conference, EA boss John Ricitiello explained to the audience that his company is very serious about toppling Call of Duty this fall with the release of Battlefield 3.

After showing them a demo, he proclaimed, referring to Activision's Call of Duty, "This game is designed to take down that game." He categorized it as a "battle of the titans", a rivalry like Red Sox versus Yankees or Microsoft versus Google. Riccitiello also noted that there will be a "couple hundred million dollars of marketing going against these two products going head-to-head."

Ultimately, Riccitello declared, "We think we've got the better product."

Call of Duty is so firmly entrenched in the gaming community that it's definitely going to be challenge for EA. Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter told us last month that Battlefield 3 doesn't stand a chance of edging out Call of Duty this fall.

Link: DICE: “Most Sandbox Games Are Boring”

Swedish developer DICE has revealed that combat in its upcoming shooter Battlefield 3’s campaign more closely resembles the tightly-scripted likes of the Call Of Duty series, rather than the open, sandbox style of its previous Battlefield 2: Bad Company games.

Executive producer Patrick Bach told us: “I don’t see it as an absolute goal for all games to be sandbox games. We’ve been building sandbox games for quite some time and we’ve got pretty good at it, but I don’t see that as the only way of building games, because then we wouldn’t build campaigns at all.

“In some cases they aren’t, but in most cases sandbox games are hardcore, boring, hard to get into and they are not very popular.”

Battlefield 3 is powered by DICE’s new Frostbite 2 engine, meaning that the series’ trademark destructible environments will be even more impressive than before. Bach, however, points out that the technology is posing its fair share of problems during development.

“Just the fact that the environment can change dynamically creates a huge challenge for us when it comes to AI,” he explains. “[It] puts a lot of challenges to our AI code when it comes to finding new cover, reacting to the fact that it has disappeared, moving and flanking based on the new situation.”

Also, if Battlefield gets a million likes on their facebook page, they'll release the trailer early (it has over 700k now).

Not necesarily related to BF3 but an interesting comment made by dice

Consoles are holding PC games back, say DICE | PC Gamer

Battlefield developer DICE have said that they believe consoles are holding back the development of PC games. In an interview on GeForce.com, executive producer on Battlefield 3 Patrick Bach said: “Most games are actually still based on the same core idea that the consoles are your focus, the superior platform or something. I don’t know why. That was the truth 5 years ago, but the world has moved on.” Read on for more details.

Bach explained that: “Most games are actually still based on the same core idea that the consoles are your focus, the superior platform or something. I don’t know why. That was the truth 5 years ago, but the world has moved on.” He says that PCs are much more powerful, hardware wise, than consoles, and few PC games truly take advantage of all that hardware.

He goes on to say: “So for our target of what we want to hit, we are now using the more powerful platform to try and prove what we see gaming being in the future rather than using the lowest common denominator, instead of developing it for the consoles and then just adding higher resolution textures and anti-aliasing for the PC version. We’re do it the other way around, we start with the highest-end technology that we can come up with and then scale it back to the consoles.”

That's all well and good, but are consoles holding back the money that is lining DICE's pockets?

Technically yes because the Battlefield games on consoles have been sub par and not worth it (in terms of sales I think). Bad Company 2 is only getting the love its getting because the PC community is so strong. BF2 to this day I think has more people playing on its servers then Bad Company 2 does on the consoles. It just shows the ADD console gamers have these days and how when you put out a product where you could sell expansions or DLC later it really doesn't become worth it.

I'm honestly not surprised they are going balls out for BF3 to destroy CoD for the top shooter. They have the tools with a franchise that is hugely successful on PC and has shown huge interest on console. If they do an advertising campaign like MW2 had I have no doubt they can crush them.
