[360] How do you transfer data from "old style" 360 to "new style" slim 360?

When someone buys a new Xbox slim, how easy it to transfer your data from the old hard drive to the new system (since it doesn't use the same hard drive)? I noticed that I can't find my data transfer kit (might have thrown it away by accident)......will I need this again or does the new system come with any cables needed?

edit: I'm asking for when the day comes that my 360 dies.

you need a data transfer kit

and to transfer the licenses go to xboxlive.com and profile and you will see something along the lines of move licenses to new 360

All I did was format 15 gigs of my external harddrive to work with an xbox 360. All the demos and games I had on it, I let them slide, but all game saves and everything I couldn't get back was easily transferred.
