I've played from earbuds to standard future shop $30, to a $60 pair, and I honestly was the same throughout.
why would any one think it makes them a better gamer?

I don't think its going to improve anyone that much but they do help. I can only speak for PC gaming but with the PC I can hear the direction of where sounds come from much much more clearly via headset than over speaker. They aren't going to help me turn and accurately shoot the guy but it helps to know where you're being attacked from.

They block out the external noise essentially, which helps but isn't going to make you a superstar or anything. That said, I would never spend $250 on a headset. Thats absurd. I would agree anyone who does is a sucker. I think my PC headset I got for $69. Works plenty fine. I don't think I would need anything more.

Cus they think the more expensive they get, the more detailed the sound gets. Like the footsteps in COD. But any headset > $30 is going to get you that same sound. IMO anyways.

If they are using cheap headsets they won't hear you coming more than likely.

The biggest thing is hearing your team clearly, blocking out the outside noise and amplifying what your teamates are saying and the stuff going on throughout the map.

Even in non shooters the sounds of the game become so much better because the games audio is going directly into your ears, and not through your speakers, and it blocks out the outside noise.
Exactly man. So not gonna lie, I've played my PS3 once since I got my headset on Saturday (mostly cause I don't feel like playing anything except SOCOM lol) and that game was Mafia II last night. I figured why not try out the headset...experience was pretty awesome. Although sometimes I got confused because when a character who was talking was on the left of me, it'd just come through my right ear, and vice versa. Almost like it was backwards. I'm hoping it's just for that game and doesn't happen in SOCOM. Overall though, I'm very satisfied thus far.

The thing is, my TV has pretty good speakers. I'm in a mid-sized room as well, and I've never found the need for an expensive pair of earphones to play better. I've heard all the excuses, including footsteps for Call of Duty, but I think its crap. Maybe if someone is playing in the city, or they have a big room that they are playing in, it would be worth it. But, as I said earlier, anything that gets more expensive than a game is absurd.
