    [PS3] Starhawk

    Time for it's thread:

Starhawk Confirmed, First Details & Gameplay Images Revealed

Although gamers already knew Starhawk was pretty much going to be unveiled via GTTV tomorrow morning, the first gameplay images for the PS3 exclusive have been revealed. The title has also been confirmed via the game’s menu screen showing Starhawk; the game’s first details have also been unearthed.

    The image below confirms Starhawk:

The images come via IGN’s early video which shows the first gameplay screenshots of Starhawk. One of the images (thanks GAF) also show that the game is set somewhat in space due to the planets.

The PlayStation 3 exclusive is a 3rd person shooter due to the female character shown below in action and, as mentioned, is set in space.

                  Link: PS3 exclusive Starhawk announced

Starhawk, due out in 2012, is being developed by LightBox Interactive, the studio set up by Dylan Jobe and other ex-members of Incognito Entertainment, and Sony Santa Monica.

Warhawk launched as a Blu-ray and digitial download. Starhawk, however, will be released as a Blu-ray retail only. Unlike Warhawk, Starhawk features a fully-fledged single-player campaign as well as the multiplayer portion the series is known for.

Players assume the role of Emmett Graves, a Rift miner turned gun for hire altered by Rift Energy, found on the outer reaches of space. The enemy faction is the Outcast, humans turned into monsters following exposure to Rift Energy.

The game has a Wild West in space look and feel. Graves goes in search of his outlaw brother, the leader of the Outcasts. Levels are large and open, designed to offer dynamic gameplay with AI that adapts to the player's actions.

The gameplay hook this time is an RTS-lite element called "Build and Battle". As players kill enemies and other players they gather resources, spent on calling down structures from orbit and placed down on the battlefield as they see fit.

Structures include walls, gates, turrets and landing pads for vehicles. Structures can be demolished, too.

On the multiplayer side, Starhawk features 32-player matches, up to four-player online and offline co-op play, and split-screen gameplay within multiplayer and co-op modes against an endless attack of enemies.

The game supports tournaments, leaderboards, clans and additional friend list and quick matches. There's a community events calendar, ticker tape updates, and plans for a Starhawk Android app.

A few other items that were discussed but not shown, the online features are definitely going to be the deepest we've ever seen on a PS3 game:
                  • Full Clan support (not just a tag)
                  • In-game calendar
                  • Cross-Server Clan Voice Chat
                  • A Fully Automated and Integrated Tournament System (we heard him say cell phone, but we're not sure if it was something in-game or not)

                        Link: Server-side updates

The freshly announced PS3 exclusive Starhawk will be able to fix bugs and other gameplay issues without having to go through the regular process of bulky updates and lengthy certifications, according to Sony.

Speaking to VideoGamer.com at the game's London reveal earlier this week, SCEA senior producer Harvard Bonin confirmed that "if we feel like, oh boy, the Kinetic rifle feels awfully overpowered - and here's why - then we can make a quick fix, and you won't even know it actually - it'll just be live on our end."

Just how much can Sony change? "Quite a bit," says Bonin, "even to the point that we can change some of the art. We can certainly fix map holes if, somehow, they sneak through."

Normally, if a developer needs to patch a game on the client-side - your console - it's required to go through a lengthy submission process with the console manufacturer, and then the user needs to download the patch to their hard drive.

                            Link: Your Starhawk Questions Answered

Does Starhawk have two flight modes?

YES. Initially we wanted to have Starhawk use only a single flight mode so that all players were unified. We worked a lot on this but ultimately decided that the needs of a newbie player and the needs of a hardcore Warhawk fan were just too far apart and we weren’t willing to make the compromises needed to jam everyone into a single flight mode. So…Starhawk has two flight modes and both are great! The default mode is very simple and great for new to mid-level players (and yes, reverse aiming issues have been fixed). It’s a re-vamped version of our “arcade mode” (but much better), thanks in part to a lot of play testing on it. The advanced mode is for players that want even more control while flying around in the Hawk. It’s just like Warhawk’s “pro mode” flight mode.

                            Server list or matchmaking?

In Starhawk you have both. Matchmaking is good for casual players that just want to be put into a game quickly, or for when we need to enforce that players are not “cheating” or stat padding or whatever you want to call it. It lets the Starhawk servers control which players get put into which games. That said, our fans LOVE it so we let you browse the custom “non-official” games through a server list. This gives you the best of both worlds.

                            Is Starhawk’s character camera new?

YES. We got a lot of questions from people that noticed from the video that there was a tight over-the-shoulder (OTS) camera in some of the shots. We still have a normal camera that is further away from the character, although it is a bit closer than what we had in Warhawk. However, this new OTS aiming mode is enabled when you zoom in with your weapon. It gives you a combat choice—you can do your normal run-and-gun at some cost of accuracy or you can go OTS for more accuracy, although you’ll be a bit slower.

Does Starhawk still use weapon pickups?

Hell yes! I was actually surprised that people were worried about this. It was interesting to see the Tweets from people who were scared that we might be going to a class-based load out approach. No! We still have pickups. And getting a weapon is not limited by rank. That kind of thing just doesn’t work for our type of gameplay. In fact, weapon pickups are an important part of Build & Battle. For example, If you want your team to have “snipers,” you can build lookout towers which include the sniper rifle pickup. Or, if you want some heavy weapons, you can build a supply bunker to get a rocket launcher and a shotgun. Now of course we are still in the process of tuning the game so things are always bound to change, but this should give you a good idea of where we’re headed.

                            Are there space environments?

100% YES. The outer space environment set that the art team here at LightBox Interactive has put together is really awesome. Super fun to play on and looks great. Some of the elements are still being worked on and we don’t want to show it untill we’re 100% happy with it. But since sooo many of you guys asked, Sony was okay with me at least telling you that Starhawk was not just about terrain battles. :-)
