From what I understand, LulzSec started with hacking PBS because they ran an unfavorable WikiLeaks documentary. They proceeded to go after Sony BMG and Sony Pictures and released some of the personal info they stole afterwards. Then, they started hitting developer sites and goverment sites (both official and affiliated).

If you're asking about whether these kinds of attacks were happening before LulzSec, I'd have to imagine so. However, the only reason we're hearing about these is because LulzSec announces each attack through their twitter account.
