    [360] Disc Drive Issues?

I realize that the thread title is kind of a given, what with the 360 being a massive pile of shittiness in terms of reliability (I still worry about RROD every time I turn it on -- I don't know how Twigg made it through 5 or so of these), but this problem is slightly unique I think:

I have around 25 games for the 360. 24 of them read perfectly in the disc drive. Dragon Age: Origins for whatever reason doesn't (it either will never read the disc or will finally read the disc after like, 15 tries). Just got CoD: Black Ops in the mail from Gamefly, popped it in, same thing happened. Does anyone know if this is a game specific thing? I can't for the life of me wrap my head around it because, as I said, the rest of my games work fine. It takes me back to the days of the PS2 fat where some discs were lighter and I had to put tape and shit on the top of the discs to make them heavier so that the disc drive would read them.

Anyway, just wondering if this is an issue that anyone else has had, if anyone else knew of a reason why certain games would work and not others, and finally, if anyone had a solution?

Run a DVD lens cleaner in it. Or in fact run any DVD in it.

So turn on the 360, put in a DVD that will usually run, eject the DVD then put your game in and it will work.

I've had to do this for like 2 years now.

Will do. I did try this with other 360 games and it didn't work. Would there be a reason why a DVD would work instead?

No clue. Basically the disc doesn't spin properly sometimes or the lens doesn't work... for whatever reason maybe less stress but DVDs always seem to work right away and get it "fired" up.

        It really makes no sense.

It really doesn't. What a lovely piece of equipment this thing is.

Gotta say Fed, worked perfectly with a DVD despite not working with another 360 game. Very, very strange. It would appear that now Memento will be my goto DVD for 360 discs not working.

Yup. Makes no sense but it's worked for 2 years.

This is weird. The only game I've ever had that wouldn't load for me (knock on wood) was Spiderman: Shattered Dimensions. But that was because I bought it used and it had a tiny, barely visible crack, emanating from the center hole. I think when the disc would start spinning the crack would separate further to the point that the drive couldn't read it.

But I doubt that is your problem.

My PS3 does this for me, but so far, out of all of the DVDs, Blu Ray movies and games that have moved through that system, the only movie that did it was Daybreakers. I actually have to turn the PS3 off with that disc in there and turn it back on.

Either clean it or run another DVD. If that doesn't work, its either specific with the game or there is some sort of imperfection with the disc.

I believe the issue is that those games were early AP25 protection games and with some types of drive it would make it so the laser start point would mess up so it would go black screen when booting the game or just lock up completely. I have had the same issue with a couple of friends 360's that have Liteon drives in there.

I would say that maybe your 360 is trying to tell you that Black Ops is garbage and it's refusing to play it. But that wouldn't explain Dragon Age. Ha.

^It's still very, very bitter about Black Ops.

Hah well, I enjoyed what little I got to play of it earlier. Now though, went to play a little more and even the DVD trick wasn't working. Oh well. Back to InFamous 2 I guess.

Another thing you could try: unplug everything, clean any dust and then switch the console to the opposite way you have it now (so if its vertical, put it horizontal, or vice versa.)
