    [PC] STEAM Hacked

This week Valve Corporation head Gabe Newell has announced that the gaming hub Steam has suffered an attack on their forums which may well have put credit card numbers and other users personal information at risk. The attack apparently went down this Sunday and Valve is currently letting everyone who had any personal info listed at Steam to watch their credit card activity in the near future for possible fraudulent activity. Here after the attack the Steam Forums are closed and will remain closed for the time being while Steam itself will remain operating as normal.

Note that the attack itself was not necessarily aimed at the credit card information and other personal bits of users at Steam, but that the larger attack did have the potential to access said information. A note from Newell read something to the effect of don’t be scared, but also keep your guard up. Have a look at a couple bits of that statement here:

“We do not have evidence that encrypted credit card numbers or personally identifying information were taken by the intruders, or that the protection on credit card numbers or passwords was cracked. We are still investigating. We don’t have evidence of credit card misuse at this time. Nonetheless you should watch your credit card activity and statements closely. [The database in question] contained information including user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information [but] we do not know of any compromised Steam accounts, so we are not planning to force a change of Steam account passwords (which are separate from forum passwords). However, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to change that as well, especially if it is the same as your Steam forum account password.” – Newell

Good advice when such big bits of information are at risk. I’d guess a call to your credit card company noting the possibility of fraud wouldn’t be a bad idea also. Meanwhile if you’re feeling just fine and dandy because your credit card seems fine to you, you can continue playing your games on Steam all night long, as only the forums are currently down until they fix it all up.

I figured this announcement was coming when the news broke that the forums were hacked. Already changed my password just in case.

For real though, this is not helping the perception that if you put your info on the web, it's gonna get stolen.

Agreed. I have no problem with the 99% taking from the 1%, but this is the 99% taking from the 99%.

These hacks are just getting ridiculous and more pointless by the day. Why the fuck would anyone hack Steam?

Steam is a service that I enjoy using. They get the games I want (except for BF3) available for me in an easy, user friendly way. I've 'obtained' games in the past, but since Steam came around it's been years since I've done that. I either buy it Day 1, or I know I can be patient and find it on one of their many sales. Everybody wins. Devs see a giant boost in revenue for 3+ month old games (sometimes even newer. Deus Ex was 40% off within a month if I recall) and consumers get to enjoy quality games at great prices

There is no reason I can think of why Steam is a worth while target. The guys who are talented enough computer users to hack this are likely great candidates to enjoy the service

This. Steam is kind of like the grocery store, if you just buy whats on sale, you can save alot of money and eventually have a pantry full of goodies. I don't even own a modern console, and I am more than capable of, erm, aquiring games, but when steam puts so many titles on sale for 3 bucks, why bother? I click the add to cart i go smoke a little somethin somethin and when i come back its there. Plus, when my woman needs the laptop to run movies (I have an HDMI port, she doesnt) I can just log into my steam account on her machine and im good to go.

Anyway, I'm not worried about this, it was just a forum hacking, and I dont post on the forums, they didnt get anywhere near credit card info which was heavily encrypted in the first place. on top of that, any reasonable banking institution is going to lock down wierd activity anyway (that's like, WHY you use a big bank in the first place). I took money out of a bank from a side of town i dont visit often and Chase was quick to lock down the charges. I'm pretty sure they'd know what to do if someone in bumfuck egypt tried to buy falafel with it something.

I'm just glad some hacker group hasnt come out and tried to feed us some bullshit about how this was some kind of statement against the man. stealing my forum password doesnt strike fear into the heart of wallstreet.
