[PC] Built a new PC today

finished building my new pc today. thanks to jms and leaf for some excellent advice. this whole thing started when i found a sweet deal on a laptop. after playing with it for a week i realized that laptops suck and it wouldnt do the job for me. so then i found this real nice gateway pc and probably would have been fine with it until jms planted the idea to put in a video card....so i did with a new power supply....it looked great

about a week ago i realized that my new pc was not so great when it came to specs. i didnt feel like fucking around with building one on my own....but the thought just wouldnt go away....so i went shopping and found a setup that was only going to be $50 more than my gateway but with far better components.

started building at 7 and finished at 10....then had to do the software configs and installs. finished at about midnight tonoght.

a few things about this setup. i really had a hard time deciding on a case. top notch cooling was very important along with having good cable management. in the end a found an affordable case with 2 200mm fans and 1 120mm fan. plus i got the coolermaster heatsink fan for my cpu. the fans are whisper quiet and move a ton of air. im sitting next to it and im cold because opf the cold air.
this case is awesome. its huge with a tremendous amount of expansion. super easy to pop in and out drives and more than enough room to work inside. it has a red LED on the front fan.....but the MSI Mobo i bought has blue light insdicators that look like they are coming from the top fan....lol....oh well, at least they can all be shut off. very happy with this case.

as for the build itself. i didnt have any issues. the heat sink came with terrible instructions making it very time consuming. took about an hour for that alone...the other time consuming part was cable management.

the thing fired up....bios was a snap...windows 7 installed and we are good to go

Helluva nice system. Should be smoking fast. I assume with a cooler that you are going to mess around with OCing it?

I have the i5-2500K chip, same amount of RAM, same cooler, and a bigger Cooler Master case. I found the cooler instructions useless, too, but CM had a pretty good video on the website showing the installation that helped a ton.

The TwinFrozr is nice, the two fans can keep that card cool almost by itself.

What was the final damage? Just eyeballing the parts, I'm guessing $1300 or so?

Building a PC is not hard, if you havent done it before, it simply requires balls.

Every component DOESNT EVEN FIT WHERE IT DOESNT BELONG. if you try to stick RAM in your video card slot, you deserve to be electrocuted.

It was probably some 10-12 years I built my first PC, and it took me all day to figure it out + the software installs. this was on winXP. todays machines are even easier because PCI slots are hardly used. I felt like such a goddamn boss after it got done and the experience kept food on my table and paychecks rolling in for many moons after.

so, while i didnt read into detail on your specs, mostly because im dying to build a new rig myself and its financially irresponsible right now, I congratulate you on having the balls to do it and figure it out. thats literally all it takes, fuck paying any manufacturerer a couple hundred bucks on top of the part costs, when you just need to get over the fear of a machines internal components. Cars, TVs, laptops, shit even cell phones... these are thngs that have a bunch of tiny components and wierd cases and minutiae that are difficult to figure out. A desktop PC is not. the basic theory hasnt changed in 20 years, and well done that you figured this out for yourself.

Nice job maynard. Yeah that cooler i had....I didnt like it to be honest. I found that it restricted airflow in my case and my fans would run like crazy.

Next upgrade should be a solid state drive. I use it to boot my system and games and the witcher booted up in like 3-5 seconds. Crazy.

i paid $1285...that includes everything...including windows 7. but i also sold my old pc and monitor for $150....so $1135 was my final cost

I built my PC about 4 years ago. I should probably rebuild or upgrade some things but I haven't gamed on my PC in some time so I haven't really felt the need. It still runs like a champ and is powerful enough for what I use it for. I miss PC gaming. If I ever get going again, I'll make some changes.

here are some updated pics. since originally building this system i upgraded the case, added some lights, added an SSD, added a fan controller and some extra fans. also added a Corsair 750w modular psu.. And added a ASUS 27 in LED Monitor
the only other thing i am thinking of adding is a 120mm Red LED PWM fan to replace one of my current heatsink fans.
