The exclusivity talk is silly IMO anyway unless the consumer also works for one of the companies.
That's a fair point. Besides some PSN games (Dead Nation for one) and DC Universe it's hard to think of any new IP's within the past year or so. But their exclusives are so strong that they can keep iterating on them and people will still be happy for quite some time.

I couldn't disagree more. Exclusives are what drives someone to buying and ultimately keeping a system. If MS doesn't step up their game what point will there be to own a MS console next generation? If you could only buy one why wouldn't it be a Sony console? You get all the third party games and way more exclusives. MS only has Halo, Fable, Gears and Forza right now, although they are all strong IP's. Halo, while I think it will sell quite well obviously, I think has faltered significantly. I don't know a single person that still plays Reach consistently. Whereas people played Halo 2 and 3 until their hands bled. Fable 3 was apparently a HUGE disappointment and the Kinect game looks absolutely atrocious. Forza is Forza. Gears is the only exclusive that seems to get better with each game and who knows what is going to happen with that series considering the trilogy is "over".

Sony does have Starhawk in the immediate future, although I know it's technically iterating on Warhawk but it seems to be completely unrecognizable from that game. Plus I Am Alive is coming down the pipe.

I've had both every generation (and in some cases all three when I've had Nintendo consoles). Exclusivity means nothing to me, and I would say consumer wise still it is unimportant. No one is stopping anyone from owning both systems. As far as the console developers are concerned it is of course important, because that is where driving people to buy a system actually matters. That was my point on why it's unimportant to the consumer.

And I think MS's exclusivity is directly tied next generation to how much PC game developers like working on it. I'll still likely own both major systems, and will continue to use them for different things, depending on the releases for each.

I think with the continuing recession, rising DLC costs, and New Expensive consoles on the way, ur gonna see less ppl owning both systems. I expect exclusives and New Ips to play a bigger role next gen.

and may I add, Everything used to stop when a Halo game released. The only other game that got as much hype and playtime was probably GTA. Now when a halo game releases it's just another game. Halo: Anniversary was such a quiet release I thought it was Under the Radar.

Exactly Med. Of course if you can afford all the consoles the point is moot. It's easy to say "I own all the consoles, who gives a fuck?" But you and I and a lot of people on a gaming site like this are in the minority. Most average joes have one game console because that's all the time they have for gaming and also all they can afford. But more and more people these days can only afford one. So moving into the next generation especially, assuming they release around the same time, it would be a no brainer to choose the console that has a much bigger stable and variety of games.

I also wholeheartedly agree about Halo. When Reach came out people played it for a few weeks and that was it. Sure there are still hardcore players but you have that with any game. It was crazy how quickly everyone on my friends list, including me, stopped playing Reach. Hell, I haven't even finished the campaign. As for Anniversary, I'm curious how many copies it sold because I only know of two people here that actually bought it, with me being one of them. I'm guessing it didn't sell well because otherwise MS would be tooting their own horn on every media outlet imaginable. It didn't help that it was at least $10 too much.

You are both right, but you both are missing my point. Why do I care about what other consumers want? I am exactly in the "I own both, so who gives a fuck?" mindset because I don't care about Joe Shmo and what he can and can't get, because neither affects what I can and can't get. Why would one consumer care about what another chooses? It's a silly discussion unless you work for the manufacturer, or you live in some parallel universe where you're only ever legally allowed to buy 1 console. It just starts fanboy arguments on the consumer because it starts to get down to those stupid feelings of jealousy or needing to feel justified in your one console purchase. So yeah, silly to me, unless you work for the manufacturer of the product and such exclusivity could detemine how much money you make.

EDIT - and as far as Halo is concerned, I think that this is what happens when a developer iterates too much. The response becomes more tepid because despite how well polished and fine-tuned everything is, it's just more of the same at the same time. I think that if Gears goes on, or Uncharted or even to a degree games like Batman, etc...they run the risk of the same thing happening. The reason series like GTA and Final Fantasy last so long is because they make pretty huge changes in their sequels, yet remain similar at their core. I would say a lot of games with sequels (like the ones I mentioned) run the risk of becoming like Halo just because it's more of the same with no real improvements other than polish. That's why I'm hoping both big console makes push for some new IPs regardless of exclusivity in the next gen.

Man I LOVE halo.... but if they think an empty Halo sequel is going to get me excited 2 gens later might as well get the time machine see how I felt when PacMan CE came out for Genesis.

Only thing that saved me from abandoning gaming this gen was Gears of War and Portal.

If the next gen comes and the only AAA titles are Halo , COD , GOW , and GTA Im liable to go to pure piracy because I wont be playing any game past a once over of the campaign.

Because consumer response is what drives the industry. Just look at the Kinect. Hardcore gamers really don't give two fucks about that thing but the average joe ate that shit up so MS is seemingly putting all their eggs in that basket. Which probably explains why the just keep letting exclusives go because they are concentrating on expanding Kinect.
Just look at XCOM. Remember when that was supposed to be a 360 exclusive? Not anymore. The only thing that MS cares about at this point is getting maps for CoD a month early and Kinect. As a gamer that should concern you. I know I for one will be seriously considering NOT getting the next Xbox because it will almost be a waste of money. I love games so I'll get it at some point but not at launch. A few years down the road when it's much cheaper. I don't play Forza. I still haven't opened Fable 2 and I hear Fable 3 sucks ass. Halo is stale. The only series I really care about on Xbox now is Gears and who knows where that is going. It might be done for all we know.

Easier said than done. Obviously every series started out new at some point but consumers have shown that they will buy many more copies of Call of Duty 17 or Gears of War 4 before they will buy a new IP like Shadows of the Damned. SotD was one of my favorite games of 2011 but no one fucking bought it. Companies don't want to take risks like that. They want guaranteed money makers. It;s just a shame that sometimes they milk series too hard and drive consumers away, like Activision did with Guitar Hero and MS seems to be doing with Halo.

It almost seems like Sony has a little better idea of what to do with their exclusives, at least with some of them. Resistance seems to be done. Uncharted as well, at least for a long while considering Naughty Dog is now working on a new IP. Media Molecule seems to be happy with two LBP's and constantly releasing new content. I'm not sure about Killzone. MS seems content with holding on top just a few exclusives and milking them to death. If they stick with that philosophy it's going to ultimately bite them in the ass.

The problem is that they are going to have five Halo games released in a period of five and a half years. There is no worse way to numb interest than to saturate the market like that. Not only that, but it breaks up the online community. Halo Anniversary maps were done with the Reach engine and used the Reach rankings because 343 didn't want to mess with the community.

Halo 4 is going to continue a story that pretty much everyone knows. I know that I am interested to see how it is continued. But, with so many other franchises offering online multiplayer, 343 needs to change up the script and get people to stick with Halo and become that game where everything stops.
