Honestly, it's only a matter of time before hard-copies disappear altogether. Sony has been saying since the PS2 that they want to create a device that does everything home electronics needs. One day you'll go to a store (perhaps virtually) and buy a Sony Bravia TV with a built-in Vaio/Playstation and you'll carry around tablets and smart phones that are all hooked into the same internet. Storage space for media will be astronomical as all you games, movies, TV series, etc. are all stored on the same network (maybe a cloud-type thing?) and all purchased electronically.

I wouldn't be surprised to see this in 10 years. Just think 10 years ago smartphones were just barely coming out. Techy people had dumbphones and Palm Pilots while iPods were just barely seeing the light of day. Now tablets and touchscreens are popping up all over and competition will start to make the prices on thoes fall in the next 1-3 years. Don't be surprised when tablets replace the laptop someday.

I don't know how it would work with consoles though. Steam is huge, but EA has already made their own system (Origin), and I wouldn't be surprised if others follow.

In a perfect world. No fucking way MS would ever discount digital games. Just look at their Games on Demand now. Even the last gen games are at least twice as much as you can find them in the store. And the more current games are still listed at least at MSRP of the disc versions.

Agreed. I would see them going all digital before ever incorporating a bluray drive in their console.

This article breaks down he rumors and says the used game thing has zero chance of happening.

I also find the first comment interesting. Apparently Molyneaux tweeted that the console will ship with a tablet type device. Stealing ideas from Nintendo now? Of course Molyneaux is the master if bullshit.

What other options do they have besides Blu-Ray or digital only?

A new format entirely I guess?

Can't imagine that's a better choice than Blu Ray tho.

Like HD-DVD? I just don't see game companies latching on to a proprietary format, but who knows. Everything else MS makes is proprietary.

Sony makes money for every blu-ray disc produced therefore.....

Sorry, I meant making a format that's equal or better to Blu Ray. lol.

We're getting to a point (at least from what I see) where people don't have collections of disc content for movies/tv but have mostly digital. Now that could be simply the perception I get from my own life or from people my own age, but even my parents who are super old school with technology don't even do a "movie collection" anymore.

If they went proprietary I don't see it being a big deal should it be a superior cutting edge format that is great for gaming because I believe the value in a console playing "movie discs" is becoming rather overrated and unneccessary.

Just give me a disc that holds a fuck ton of content to help avoid DLC rape is all I really want with this.

Nintendo has been doing it for years and they seem to be doing ok.

Remember Gamecube discs? Plus the tiny cartridges they use for their handhelds.

Speaking of Steam, I'm interested in hearing the details for Big Picture Mode.

Steamworks is a set of tools and services that help game developers and publishers build their games and get the most out of distributing on Steam.

More and more people are doing this with their PC's.

I recently bought the first batman game for like 2 bucks during the christmas steam deal and was playing it on my tv because my gaming computer was sitting close to it at the time. All I really needed to do for that game was to go out and buy the xbox controller for the PC and I would be set.

EA pretty much said F you to valve and they made their stand with BF3.

Origin is useless but they really worked their EA magic by tying it into some games now I can't even play BF3 without having to open up and log into origin just to hit the stupid play button and it just sits there in the background literally doing nothing.
