    F1: 2011

Alright, I figured we needed one of these now since someone other than just Garrett has the game. Plus it might be a good way to talk jms into getting it lol. Figured this would be the best place to put it since we're the only ones who'd be interested in it anyways.

I just finished up my second race with the Marussia Virgin team. At the Grand Prix of Australia I qualified 20th and after a last lap spinout (was 5th), I finished 18th. Next at the Grand Prix of Malaysia, I qualified 3rd and finished 4th. Much better run for me. Practice and qualifying are HUGE in this game. To succeed you have to be pretty familiar with these tracks and you have to qualify in the top 3 grids or so to compete in the race. Absolutely loving this game so far.

Btw, co-op championship mode sounds fun as hell.

Just finished up my 3rd race with team Marussia Virgin at the China Grand Prix. Had a dismal practice in the rain, and a not so hot qualifying spot of 14th. Had a nice sunny day for the race, which was nice, b/c I'm much better with my dry setup than I am with the wet setup.

So I got a good jump in the first turn, jumped up to 3rd place. Had a good hold on that spot until I pitted on lap 4 to change from option to prime tires. Only 4 of us pitted on the 4th lap, so I came out in 10th. Next lap when everyone else pitted I reclaimed my 3rd spot. Had a really fun battle during the final 4 laps with Michael Shumaker for the 3/4 spots. The 2nd place Ferrari team car spun out on the 2nd to last turn which handed me the #2 spot and my first podium of the season. The finish moved me up to 4th in the driver's championship, and moved the Virgin team up to 4th for the Constructor's championship.

Next up is the Turkish Grand Prix.

(really wish this game had picture/video ability)

          Tire rules

          Tires

A single supplier of tires supplies all tires and has done so since the 2007 season. The supplier (currently Pirelli) supplies four specifications of slick dry-weather tires, of which two are available at each race: Prime tires (hard or medium compound) and Option tires (soft or super-soft compound). The Prime tire is more durable than the Option tire, while the Option tire provides more grip than the Prime tire and therefore provides a faster lap time. Additionally, the supplier supplies one of intermediate and one of wet-weather tires. Each compound is differentiated by a different color of the Pirelli logo on the sidewall; red for super-soft, yellow for soft, white for medium and silver for hard, light blue for intermediate and orange for wets. At the start of the 2011 season, the option tire was also differentiated by a white band around the edge of the tire to improve visibility. This temporary solution was used in Malaysia and China before the permanent solution of a colored band running alongside the Pirelli logo was adopted for the rest of the season.

Competitors are allowed only a limited number of tire sets during a race event: eleven dry, four intermediate, three wet. Each tire must be marked with a unique identifier during a race event.

During the practice sessions drivers are limited to use of three sets of dry tires and certain sets must be returned to the supplier before the second and third sessions. If qualifying and starting the race in dry tires, drivers who make it to the third qualification session must use the tires they set their grid time with to start the race. Cars must race on both type of dry compounds during a race unless intermediate or wet tires have been used by that car in that race.

Prior to qualifying, wet- and intermediate-tires may only be used if the track is judged wet by the race director. Starting the race behind the safety car due to heavy rain requires cars to be fitted with wet-tires until they pit.

Heaters may be applied only to the outside of tires.

          Engines:

Formula One engines must be naturally aspirated, four-stroke internal combustion petrol engines with reciprocating circular pistons and a maximum of two intake and two exhaust valves per cylinder. They must be V8 engines and have a maximum displacement of 2.4 litres.

Devices designed to pre-cool air before it enters the cylinders are not allowed, nor is the injection of any substance into the cylinders other than air and fuel (petrol).

Variable-length intake and exhaust systems are also forbidden.

The crankshaft and camshafts must be made of steel or cast iron. The use of carbon composite materials for the cylinder block, cylinder head and pistons is not allowed.

Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS - hybrid technology) is permitted beginning in 2009 provided no more than 400 kJ is used in any one lap and no more than 60 kW (80 hp) in or out is permitted. In addition to one fully charged KERS the maximum recoverable energy stored on the car may not exceed 300 kJ.[9] To allow for taller, heavier drivers to race in a car with a KERS the weight allowance of the car was raised by 15 kg. For 2010, KERS were still permitted in Formula One, but all teams agreed to go throughout the 2010 season without using KERS systems due to the very expensive development and possible weight balance difficulties since larger fuel tanks would have to be used.

Separate starting devices may be used to start engines in the pits and on the grid. If the engine is fitted with an anti-stall device, this must be set to cut the engine within ten seconds in the event of an accident.

Each driver is allowed to use up to eight engines during a season. A ten place starting grid penalty will be applied at each event where an additional engine is used.

            Penalties:

Penalties may be imposed on drivers for numerous offenses, including starting prematurely, speeding in the pitlane, causing an accident, blocking unfairly, or ignoring flags of any color. There are four types of penalty which a driver may incur for violation of on-track rules:

The drive-through penalty requires the driver to enter the pitlane, drive through it while obeying its speed limit, and exit without stopping. Drive-through penalties are normally imposed for minor offences, for example crossing the white line at the end of the pit lane before passing over the end of the line, kerb-hopping at chicanes, ignoring yellow flags, or cutting corners. As a drive through penalty does not require the driver to stop at their pit, it is less costly to a driver's race times than a stop-go penalty.
The ten-second (or "stop-go") penalty requires the driver to enter the pitlane, stop at his pit for ten seconds, and exit again. As the stop is designed to punish the driver for an offence, team mechanics are forbidden to work on the offending car at any time while the driver is serving the penalty. Stop-go penalties are generally imposed for more serious offences, such as jump starts, pit lane speeding, ignoring blue flags or unfair blocking. The ten second halt makes a stop-go penalty much more costly to a driver's race times than a drive-through penalty.
A more extreme penalty may be imposed for more severe infractions: adding ten places to the driver's grid position at the next grand prix, e.g. if he qualified in pole position he would start the race eleventh from the front.
The most severe penalty in common use is a black flag, which may be imposed for ignoring penalties or for technical irregularities of any sort; it signifies that the driver has been disqualified from the race and his results for that race will not count toward the championship.
If the black flag is not considered sufficient for the offense that the driver has committed, they may be banned for a number of races after the event.
The most extreme punishment of all (used for seriously endangering the life of another driver) is to be excluded from the drivers world championship that year. Such cases may, of course, also be taken to court.

For the drive-through and stop-go penalties, a driver has two laps from the time his team hears of the penalty to enter the pits; if he does not pit within two laps, he will be black-flagged. The exception to this rule is if the Safety Car is deployed before a driver serves his penalty, in which case he is not allowed to serve his penalty until after the Safety Car comes back in. If he incurs a penalty within the last five laps of the race, he need not pit at all; instead, twenty-five seconds will be added to his total race time in case of a drive-through penalty, and thirty seconds in case of stop-go penalty.

I find it fun trying to come up with a pitting strategy for the tire change. Nobody ever pits on the same lap, so trying to find that sweet spot has been kind of exciting.

And yeah, penalties will KILL you, whether it be for cutting corners or causing wrecks. Luckily they're pretty forgiving if you cut a corner, they'll usually just give you a couple warnings first. But if you blatantly cause an accident, they wont hesitate to penalize your ass.

Yeah veteran. Oh, and funny you should say that, I've been looking at that game for the past 2 days b/c I played 2 and had a blast with it. The "complete" edition releases tomorrow and I'm going to go pick it up in the morning.

Just finished up the Turkish Grand Prix. Of course there was heavy rain during qualifying, so I sucked ass and qualified 22nd out of 24. Since I started so far back, there was really no hope of a podium finish for this race. I ended up climbing my way up and finishing 10th. At least I was able to finish in the points. Was a really fun track though, quite fast. With McLaren's great showing of 2 top 5 finishes, I've been overtaken for 4th in the driver's championship by 5 points and have moved down to 7th in the constructor's championship with my teammates not so good showing this time around. Team Red Bull is destroying the rest of the field in the constructors championship. I think they've won 3 out of the 4 races so far.

Next up is the Grand Prix of Spain. Really excited, this is the only race that stands between me and the Monaco Grand Prix.

Looks like a great game, I might pick it up. I've been swamped with work this semester, however, and I'm in the middle of a Forza addiction. Shame that I'm usually busy every night after 8pm, but that should end soon.

Yeah I've been crazy addicted to racing anything lately, so I went out and picked this up and Dirt 3. Both are damn good games so far.

I blew the dust off the game today and boy, have I forgotten how fun, challenging and tiring this game is. You'd understand the tiring part if you had a wheel.

I continued my season with HRT that I started many months ago with what I believe is my 4th race ( China). I ran the practice session for the complete hour, in a torrential downpour! The rain did let up near the end but it never stopped.

Due to my stupidity and forgetting that rules apply to practice too, I incurred a 10 PLACE penalty for stopping in the middle of the track because I couldn't find the pit.

I managed to finish in 17th place with a time of 145.xxx, in the rain, mind you. My personal best on that track is 138'ish in dry weather. I have to run qualifying next and I need to place well considering my penalty. At least the forecast for Q and the race is dry weather.

Driving int he rain is pretty cool, but I just cannot get a good setup for it. I'm always so far behind the top times. Always irritates me if I have to qualify in the rain lol.

Do you race full races or %?

take look at the Andrew Bortz videos I posted. He always shows his setup before a race.

I just wing it but I might have to start applying some setup to it.
