ridiculous isnt it...with guild wars 2 you bought the game and thats it. with star wars i bought the game, but got a month free. i didnt pay for any monthly fees. Talk about a horrible precedent.

imagine the backlash if EA made people pay $60 for Madden, then charged a $15 monthly fee to play it online. with the amount of traffic that game gets its gotta be comparable to the costs of a MMO server

But Madden is one and done, with few, if any, content launches, or balancing the game after a few months. Once you hit the end of the NFL season, aren't they about done making changes to it? I'm not defending the cost to play, but I see where it comes from. With MMOs, you are either doing a sub, micro transactions or a combination of both.

According to the email, if you create an account on Curse.com then you could get a key into the beta (my guess is they are sponsoring something.) I've never come across that site before, though.
