    [PS3] Sony Buy Gaikai for 380M

    Sony has entered into an agreement to purchase Gaikai, an online cloud-gaming service. The all-shares deal will cost Sony about $380 million.
    Gaikai has been around since 2008 and has built out, "the highest quality, fastest interactive cloud-streaming platform in the world", as the company would tell you.
    In general, the move will help sure up Sony's presence in the online content space and, "will provide users with unparalleled cloud entertainment experiences". Few specifics about future plans, however, were offered in the press release, as you'll read below.
    Andrew House, President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.:
    "SCE will deliver a world-class cloud-streaming service that allows users to instantly enjoy a broad array of content ranging from immersive core games with rich graphics to casual content anytime, anywhere on a variety of internet-connected devices."
    The deal has been been rumored to be in the works for some time, though Gaikai had denied it. A couple weeks back Fortune reported the California-based company was looking for a buyer.

    Tokyo, July 2, 2012 – Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) today announced that it entered into a definitive agreement on June 30, 2012 (Japan Time) to acquire Gaikai Inc., the world's leading interactive cloud-based gaming company, for approximately USD 380 million. Through the acquisition, SCE will establish a new cloud service, ensuring that it continues to provide users with truly innovative and immersive interactive entertainment experiences.
    "By combining Gaikai's resources including its technological strength and engineering talent with SCE's extensive game platform knowledge and experience, SCE will provide users with unparalleled cloud entertainment experiences," said Andrew House, President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. "SCE will deliver a world-class cloud-streaming service that allows users to instantly enjoy a broad array of content ranging from immersive core games with rich graphics to casual content anytime, anywhere on a variety of internet-connected devices."

    Established in 2008 and headquartered in Aliso Viejo, California, Gaikai has developed the highest quality, fastest interactive cloud-streaming platform in the world that enables the
    streaming of quality games to a wide variety of devices via the internet. With this acquisition, SCE will establish a cloud service and expand its network business by taking full advantage of Gaikai's revolutionary technology and infrastructure including data centers servicing dozens of countries and key partners around the world.
    The transaction is subject to certain regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions.
    SCE will continue to aggressively expand a new world of entertainment through the introduction of innovative technologies and the delivery of amazing experiences.

    I am not a believer in cloud gaming to be honest. I want to own the game I buy, not rent it monthly.

      Just a question, but wasn't there a report a few months ago that Sony was bleeding money?

          I thought Sony's deal with Gaikai were in trouble when the cloud service announced a partnership with Samsung during E3. Anyway, here's a good article explaining the benefits and limitations of the service, and some speculation regarding when Sony will actually be able to implement it on their consoles.

            I have a feeling this will solve backwards compatibility issues with the next console. We probably won't see anything with this on the PS3

              And it's shit like this why I prefer Sony as a company over MS. Sony is making business decisions to improve GAMING. MS buys companies like Skype. Who gives a fuck?
