At first I thought this too.
I went into practice mode, told the CPU to run 4 verts, and proceeded to attempt to practice making plays on the football.
You can't, switching players while the ball is in the air is dangerous enough because of the little hesitation/lag you get after switching over. on top of that, when you try to make a play on the ball the buttons can be completely unresponsive.
Now I did pick up on the fact that your defender needs to see the football, so you figure out you have to start watching his head and take not of whether he's looking back at the quarterback or not, but even then it's hit or miss.
I've also noticed this on offense when I'm playing a game type like RTG. I can't catch passes out of the backfield with my Tailback sometimes and the ball will literally hit him in his chest. it's very annoying and to be honest the way they've absolutely nuked user defense before patching has really turned me off on the game. Usually I'll hold onto NCAA because I like the change of pace from the pro game to the college game. I like running things like Flexbone and spread option which are things you do not see in the professional game. but this game has turned out to be one of the worst game purchases I've made since Madden 09.
I'm not overly impressed with this title and while the animations have improved and it's certainly a little fluffier than previous versions I actually feel while they've made progress in some areas they've taken a step back in others.
I can see that next year I'll have to think harder about this potential purchase (much like I did with NCAA 10, which I chose not to purchase even though NCAA 09 was by far my favorite of the series).
