[PS3] PS4 to support 4K resolution?

Sony is reportedly planning to double the resolution of the PlayStation 3 for its next generation console, according to consumer electronics news site BGR.

BGR cites an anonymous source who reportedly told the site that Sony is planning to implement 4K resolution in the PlayStation 4, following the publisher's reportedly planned line-up of 80-inch XBR LED television sets sporting the same resolution. 4K has a horizontal pixel count of 4096, and is double the resolution of 1080p.

BGR claims Sony is implementing a larger scheme to push out 4K to consumers, liking it to the publisher's earlier efforts with 3D. The site says Sony's move to include support for 4K resolution media like games and movies in its next-gen console is part of an incentive to draw consumers to 4K television sets.

Development on the PlayStation 4 has been tracked back to 2010. Regarding when gamers might see the PS4, PlayStation CEO Andrew House has previously stated the publisher won't show the new hardware until it can demonstrate a "significant" leap over the PS3.

An analyst report predicts both Sony and Microsoft will have their respective future-generation consoles on store shelves by the end of next year. Sony's PS4 is rumored to boast the same graphics card as Microsoft's next Xbox.

I'm not going to drop another 5 bills for a system Day 1. I did it for the 360 and think my 1st PS3 was $400....not happening this time. Plus the sports titles I play are stripped when on new consoles, so once again the last gen sports game will be the better of the two except for graphics.

So why do people think that just because the console will support a much higher resolution it's going to be so expensive? I would hope Sony would lean from its pricing mistake with the PS3.

I doubt it... The ps3 still sold well so I can see them hashing it out for 700.

PS3 is only catching up to 360 since the price drop. Beforehand, it was awful.

Unless the next Xbox is similarly priced, there's no way it goes that high. Sony knows better than to do that again.

Good. I hope Xbox does the same. I want forward thinking hardware.
With ZERO tv content there's simply no way 4k tech would take off 5 years from now without console support.

That sounds right about the price but at the time, I got a system for me and my little bro (in HS at the time). Plus I also splurged on games and think everything came out to be ~$1200 for the Xbox release. I only got MLB The Show w/ my PS3.

What the hell is 4K anyway? 3D failed....I am surprised they are leading the way on this as well.

Conclusion
The 4K standard is already here in the home projector space, more or less. Sony makes a $25k projector that's native 4K, while JVC has several models with the "e-Shift" pixel upconverter that puts 3,840x2,160 pixels on screen even though the LCOS chips are 1,920x1,080 pixels. A case can be made for 4K with larger screens at home. At the moment, though, light output limits screen size far more than resolution. For home projectors, let's just shrug and ask, "OK, why not?"
But with televisions, 4K is stupid. Stupid, stupid, stupid. For every one of you thinking you'll rearrange your living room to sit closer to the screen, I'm positive there are thousands of others who wouldn't (or wouldn't be allowed to).
Sure screen sizes are going up, but how many of you are really going to put an 85-inch screen in your home, and sit close enough to it for 4K to matter?
Don't believe me? Get a chair, and sit close enough to your TV so you can just see the pixel structure. Now watch an entire TV show like that. Now convince your family to do the same.
There's this feeling of inevitability with 4K, like because we can do it, we will do it. I just wanted to point out early that regardless of what the marketing and hype will say, you don't need 4K.
So if someday there's a choice between a 4K 80-inch OLED and a 1080p 80-inch OLED, sure, pick the 4K. Move a little closer to it and presto. But inevitably there will be even smaller 4K displays, and unless you're sitting on top of them, there's no point.
