I'm definitely going to look for Golden Sun on GBA. I've heard a ton of awesome things about it.
Looking to get into RPGs

I saw this thread and got super excited to offer my .02. And most of my suggestions were already offered.
Fallout 1 and 2 are in my top 10 games ever. Turn based, WRPG. As Juggernaut said, you can't go wrong with Chrono Trigger, probably my favorite JRPG with Final Fantasy 6 (3 in the US) a very close second.
Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 though (2 my personal) are RPG Mecca. Dragon Age Origins does a lot of things right, but to this day no one has met the amount of content, story, and replayability of the BG series.

I don't know if I'd start with Xenogears though. That shit is fucking dense, and while I remember enjoying it in my younger days, multiple attempts to go back and play it have been met with boredom. Mostly with the mech combat, the hand to hand stuff (which I liked more back then even) is still engaging and fun.Comment

The lot of them are considered amongst the best RPG's ever made. Depends if the game style suits you or not I guess.

You could look into the Mario and Luigi rpgs on the gba, I wasn't a huge fan but they are rpgs and the story is fun. Meant for a younger generation, so there's not going to be any real epic scenes.Comment

I have stopped really reading much about it, has there been any news of how multiplayer will work? I feel like I remember BG2's multiplayer being straight up broken (although can't remember if it was an engine thing or a gameplay thing since there can be only one Bhaalspawn). /derailComment

Sounds very...heterosexual.

It's funny since I was just about to pick it up again, going to attempt a speed run and possibly get the speed run record.Comment

you guys are killing me with all this Turn Based talk.
is there an example of a turn based rpg today. im not familiar with why these are such a draw cause i got into the rpg game only a few years ago and the only experience with a turn based game was civ 4 or 5 on the pc...and i hated itComment

civ 4 is nothing like the games being discussed here. civ is a board game.
turn based games are strategic, however a game like ME or DA is similar to the old school RPG's, except the player you control has action/shooter capability really.
Like for example, in ME, you "pause" to open the action wheel, tell your party members who to attack and what abilities to use. Meanwhile you're shooting up a storm. Thus, action/rpg elements.
The games I've been referencing, you do a similar thing. Pause, tell each member what to do and who to kill. When you need to re-issue commands because of whatever is happening, pause, issue commands, and then go.Comment

Some great suggestions, and I haven't gone that deep into the RPG pool.
I would recommend the Knights of the Old Republic series, since you can play that on a 360. The first Mass Effect is a very good RPG, and then you can follow up with the other two if you like. I've heard nothing but good things about Dragon Age: Origins as well.Comment

Yeah, I would even say with DA:O it isn't action oriented at all. There is no reaction time skill required (you could argue the same with ME1 I think, although it gives the illusion a lot better). It is a pure turn based RPG, it just a really good job of tricking you into thinking that it doesn't.
The closest thing I'd say to melding Civ and an RPG is XCom, and even then I'd say the differences are pretty stark.
Maynard, if you ever wanted to see where greats like ME and DA:O came from, you should definitely give BG a whirl. Once you get past the graphics and the D&D learning curve (which I STILL haven't 100% figured out to be honest, but I at least know that negative shit for your armor = good), the story and gameplay is so rewarding.
KoTOR hasn't aged well for me, but KoTOR 2 supposedly now that it has been fixed (the end game was a mess on release -- shocking, Obsidian put out a buggy as hell, otherwise great game) is great. Would like to give another run through that. Also, I don't think that Jade Empire has been mentioned, and while in a lot of ways it represents Bioware's current direction (misdirection?), I really liked it myself. And I found the twist in that to be much more effective than the one in KoTOR (which I saw coming from a mile away despite the furor over how shocking it was).Comment

Yeah, good point. I just meant more at its crux it was pure dice rolls (Twigg FTW!). You can give yourself the illusion of it being real time, but the end result would have no difference to pausing and ordering everything (and from what I understand the PC one actually pushes you towards the more BG style of play). You can't pause Call of Duty and issue any positive orders other than "quit game" (*rimshot*)Comment

Yeah the PC one was designed differently, never played it though. I understand it had a top down (BG style) camera not available in the console game, to play it in that manner.
Ugh, enough about DA though, DA2 still pisses me off for ruining what could have been a great new franchise.Comment
