    [ALL] XCOM: Enemy Unknown

Couldn't find a thread. which blows my mind. by far the best game i've played this year.

Synopsis: Aliens invading. You get picked to lead the earths defense through the secretive XCOM project. Two layers to the game: Tactical and Strategic. Tactical layer is a turn based combat game where you control 4-6 soldiers. They level up / research new gear / get classes etc. Here's the catch though: If they die, they die. so if you fuck up you can lose your entire squad of your best guys. I end up keeping a "bench" where I try to get crappier dudes in for some experience to cover any losses I might have. It's a tactical shooter, don't let the "turn based" part confuse you. if you've played Gears of War or especially Dawn of War 2 you can play this game.

Theres the Strategic layer where you have to build a base, then dispatch jets and teams to various nations requesting your aid. You put up satellites to detect alien activity and countries will come to you for help. For example, you'll get an abduction mission, so you have to decide if you're gonna go help china, america, or south america. china might be offering you scientists. America might be offering you cash. South America might be offering you engineers. Whichever one you pick will have their panic levels reduced and the others will get fucked up by Aliens and if they panic enough they will be overrun and stop offering you their bonuses. this is a losing war, and you have to pick your battles. There is sacrifice around every corner in XCOM.

As an added bonus, there is an Ironman mode, which allows you keep one save for the game you are on, and auto updated everytime something like a guy dies. You end up caring more for your high rank bazooka guy than you do your own fucking children. When you spend 20 minutes carefully customizing everything from name to the color of their armor and the kind of hat they wear, and especially when they save your ass in impossible situations across multiple missions, it's a feeling I can't even describe when you watch them slow motion die. Sometimes, I end up bailing on missions just to save my own ass. Get sent out to rescue 15 civilians, and aliens wax my high level sniper? fuck the civilians I can't lose my other guys too. or theres times where you have "fall on the grenade" moments where you have to sacrifice somebody just so the rest can survive.

This is an old school game, a throwback to when video games were hard, and XCOM is unapologetically brutal. It's also the most compelling game I've played in a very long time. Storylines create themselves, and the randomness gives it infinite replayability. There are scripted games with shittier stories than the ones you end up inventing. There are 4X games with less depth than this. There are RTS who don't do warfare this well. This is the kind of game that you can talk to people about who don't even game and they'd be entertained by your stories.

    I can't recommend it enough. :D

I know Sethmode's been playing it, and I'm about ready to pop it in for a little bit before heading to work.

I was wondering why there wasn't a thread, everything about the game looks absolutely fantastic. As soon as it gets a little cheaper I'm going to pick it up.

honestly, i was confused by what kind of game this is when i looked at it on the web last week. i couldnt tell if it was turn based...a term that still confuses me since it seems to be a very general term when describing a game....or if it was a RTS....which isnt my cup of tea.

i never got the impression it was a FPS or anything close to gears of war.

a Turn based game is, well, simply put, based on a turn. You move each of your guys, select their actions, then other guys get a turn. Final Fantasy style. The reason I make the reference to Gears of War are the cover mechanics. as a squad you move together and hide behind cement blocks and cars and logs etc giving you varying levels of cover - and the cover itself can be blown up. This is a main tactic of mine, I use alot of explosives, so ill duck behind an SUV (full cover) and blow a hole in the side of a building, exposing the aliens inside to free shots for the rest of my squad. Obviously the parallel isnt exactly, erm, well, parallel, but I was mostly making the point that even though this type of game might be unfamiliar for you, if you've played modern duck / hide / flank shooters, and you can go into a building in Gears and know how to clear it without taking a shot, you can go into a building with your team in XCOM and methodically attack it too.

Very addictive even in the tutorial, actually want to play some now but I know I'll get too into it and that's bad for my long shift tomorrow, followed by working an event at my church early on Sunday.

Beat it this weekend, and unless Assassin's Creed 3 brings the expected thunder, I think this has to be my GOTY.

Also, FUCK THIS GAME. Holy balls is it difficult at times. But still, nothing more satisfying than my sniper perforating alien assholes from the other side of the map (Squad Sight and Double Tap FTMFW!).

this is an interesting game. i ran through the tutorial and found it to be quite good. this game is different than anything i have played. i have dl and tryed things like the total war series, but i couldnt get into them. this on seems like that....turn based rts or something. but the setting of the game makes it feel pretty cool.

idk if this is a console or pc only game. i wonder if you guys are using the controller or k/m to play? i chose the k/m. but dont see anything that would hamper using the controller

when i played it last night i just started the 2nd tutorial misson and my power went out for a second...so now i get to start over. they dont let you change from k/m to controller in the game.

Yeah, I ran into problems as well. I was searching for a mission and went on one to diffuse a bomb, and after I diffused it, an enemy dropped right behind my guy that I outfitted with the stun weapon so that was simple for me. However, this is a throwback game in more ways than one, as they don't really give you instructions. You just have to figure it out.
