Buying retarded things like keyboards/mouses and monitors can be avoided right away if you don't need them. I usually say go for the new hard drive since the new ones are just that much faster then their old counterparts. Although I really only spent like $60 on my current gaming mouse and the old microsoft keyboard I have trumps the old logitech gaming keyboard that I used to have.

Which version of windows do you have? Real or Pirated?
I currently have a shitty laptop. My budget is 2k but i do need everything including a monitor. And my windows is a legit copy. Ive never understood motherboards, i can tell the difference between an amd and intel but when it comes to specs its all greek to me

Mobo is a pretty important component. Its not just a matter of matching the mobo to the processor. If you don't pick well, you can end up limiting what your graphic card options are or whether you can OC at all. Before picking, do a bit of reading. Sites like Newegg do a decent job of helping you understand the tech. There are also some sites out there that provide suggested builds, and that can be real helpful too.

I like what I'm reading about the new Intel Ivy Bridge architecture. The i5 3570K processor looks sweet. Its supposedly a better version of the i5 2500K, which what I'm running. I think what Maynard has, too.

24" ASUS monitor is under $200, so its not like you need a ton of budget for that. Unless you want a 32" LCD TV....

i have the i7-2600k...i have not even come close to pushing this processor and i have not overclocked it or even though about overclocking. For 2k you are going above and beyond. i spent about 1500 and that includes a 27 inch monitor.

i still have my list of items which is shown in the spoiler - Total cost is $1800 with these prices shown as of july when i made this list....but i didnt pay that much. the cpu/mobo was a combo and i save 100 right there. I got the case for 100 and the monitor for 270. everything was from newegg so i got free shipping and paid no tax.

I suggest looking at a 30 day free shoprunner account so u dont have to pay shipping. and look for deals obviously. at the time, these itens were pretty much top of the line, and today there nothing i throw at it that it cant handle with ease.

if you wait that long to get it done; some of the parts may already be "out dated", lol.

but if time & budget is limited; and your current one is way way way old....then i guess it would make sense regardless.

i have been trying to justify spending another $1500+ to build a new gaming/app PC but i dont play World of Warcraft anymore so........

If you're just playing WoW, you don't need to spend near that much.

Here is how I built my gaming machine back in the day...

Ravin: "hey leaf, I want a gaming machine."
                    3 days pass
Leaf: "Come to the store and pay for it"
                    Playing games that night
All you need to know when thinking of the NHL vs Madden series is the two people involved in making the games.

                    "rammer" and "cummings"

The NHL series is a giver, Madden takes the load.

Agree with Maynard on a few points...

For one, $2k will get you a smokin machine. Not elite top end stuff, but good enough to play anything on max settings. As long as you don't splurge on something ridiculous, like an $800 case or an expensive liquid cooling kit, you can do it for less even.

Targeting a build similar to Maynard's is not a bad idea at all. Its not too far from what I did. Built mine about 18 months ago. Exact same case. Lesser Intel chip (I have the i5-2500K) and even a step down from the 2700, it does everything I need and more. I don't have an SSD, which is a pretty worthwhile investment. I spent about $2k but splurged on two monitors, extra fans, a decent trackball, and a mechanical keyboard. Unnecessary stuff but I like it.

There is one downside to buying it in pieces and then building it later, which is the possibility of faulty pieces. Most pieces of PC hardware can only be returned for refund or exchange within a certain period. Some you can test for functionality and some you really can't. So if you buy parts and sit on them for six months, you can end up having a no option if something is DOA. Not a massive risk, but still a risk.

My build will cost me around $900. I'm probably going to start buying parts this weekend as long as there is good deals.

Got my monitor and case. Probably within the next couple of weeks i'll finish getting everything.

Do wanna know the benefit of the SSD before i get one.

From what I understand, an SSD will give you incredibly fast load times for everything. SSD prices are steadily going down, so you might be able to find a decently sized and priced SSD to use as your main hard drive. What I've seen a lot of people do, though, is get a big enough SSD to put your OS and some games on, and then get a huge HDD for pictures/movies/music/etc.

This is exactly what to do for a new build. My PC boots up Windows 7 in seconds.
