[PS3] PS3 issues

Came home from a business trip a few weeks ago and my wife left me note saying that the PS3 no longer plays BluRays. I call, ask what's up, and she explains she put in a movie and it wouldn't read. She could hear it spinning but it wouldn't show up in the menu.

Games work, DVDs work, internet connection is strong. Just no BluRay discs.

Well I tried the other day and I got a BR movie playing. Then I tried to put in a game and it won't load. I can hear the disc spinning, but no icon comes up in the game menu.

Any ideas? Where do you take a PS3 to get fixed now days?

Pete had a similar situation and I think he's stuck with two dead PS3s.

You could contact Sony and ask them about getting it fixed but it'll cost a fee and you have to wait 6-8 weeks to get it back. 1-800-345-SONY

Any other service online is a crapshoot...

It's up to you if you want to send your product to a 3rd-hand company though.

It sounds like your bluray laser is fucked. Jay covered all the bases though. Sony is going to charge you an arm and a leg to fix it and upsell you on a warranty. A third party is probably the best option.

I replaced my blue ray lens myself. Not hard at all with youtube help. Just find your model number then search ebay for lens. Mine cost 60$ but that was 2 yers ago.

I replaced my blu ray lens about 6 months ago. Cost 39.80 plus 2.48 shipping on eBay.

This was for a phat ps3. The lens for the slim is about $10-15 cheaper.

Edit: 39.80 for the lens and deck. You can also buy the lens without the deck for around $13-20, depending on which model of ps3

Took it apart, swabbed the lenses with rubbing alcohol. Works good now.
