Imagine you’re out in the world and you get a hankering to buy a game. It happens. In today’s practically neolithic society, you’re forced to remember what it is you wanted to buy, wait until you get home, turn the console on, wait for it to boot up, then buy the game. And that’s assuming you want a digital copy – we won’t even bring Gamestop into the picture. Well, those days are about to change. Sony SNE +0.1% President of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida revealed a cool new Playstation 4 feature via Twitter today. Apparently, if you buy a game on your smartphone, your PS4 will wake up to download it, then go back to sleep afterwards. By the time you get back, it’s ready to play.

There’s no word on whether or not Xbox One will have a similar feature, but we’re reaching out for comment.

Not only is that a great feature, it’s part of the broader story we’re hearing with both the PS4 and the Xbox One. The companies are trying to turn their consoles into device hubs that sit in your living room, tying together phones and tablets, as well as the Playstation Vita for Sony, and any Windows device for Microsoft MSFT +1.61%. Features like this one make “Playstation” less of a box that sits under your TV and more of a cloud-based entertainment service that crosses between devices. If Sony can play that concept right, it could provide the ancillary benefit of finally moving some of its struggling Vitas.

Features like this harken back to the great used games debate that dominated discussion of next-gen consoles for months before and immediately after their announcement. If these companies want to regain more control over games sales, downloads are an obvious solution. The strategy here is to slowly incentivize downloads with cool features like this, until customers become more comfortable with a purely digital games collection. At the end of the day, we end up with something like Steam for consoles.

One also assumes that the Playstation 4 would have to be “always on, always connected” in order for this sort of thing to work.

Sony working with Atlus, Level-5, Rockstar Games, and other studios on ‘exclusive PlayStation game content’

During a stage presentation at the GameStop Expo in Las Vegas this past weekend, Sean Coleman, Sony Computer Entertainment America’s group manager of retail training and advocacy, shared a list of third-party developers Sony is working with on “exclusive game content.”

“We’ve forged great third-party partnerships with some of the biggest developers to bring exclusive game content to PlayStation gamers which creates the best place to play,” Coleman said.

This list, which we’ve typed up below, spans companies like Activision Blizzard to Atlus to Level-5 to Rockstar Games. We’ve attached known PlayStation-exclusive content to each company. The rest are a mystery, as “game content” can mean anything from an additional 60 minutes of gameplay like Watch Dogs or Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag to a fully exclusive game like Deep Down.

          • Activision Blizzard – Diablo III content
          • Atlus
          • Bethesda Games – The Elder Scrolls Online exclusive PlayStation 4 beta
          • Bluepoint Games – “Bringing a Sony classic to current game systems”
          • Bungie – Destiny content
          • Capcom – Deep Down
          • Disney Interactive
          • EA
          • Insomniac Games
          • Konami
          • Level-5
          • Nordic Games
          • Rockstar Games
          • Sanzaru Games
          • Sega
          • Square Enix
          • Sumo Digital
          • Take-Two
          • Ubisoft – Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag content, Watch Dogs content
          • Warner Bros. – Batman: Arkham Origins content
          • Zindagi Games

Also, I find it somewhat humorous when I read about stuff like this on Sony's side, there is excitement. When MS does something like this, it's all money hat comments. Go console wars!

I would never say that about exclusive content.

That $100 difference is part of it, but another is that Microsoft is probably shifting some of the stock that was originally planned for those secondary European markets back to US retailers.

PlayStation 4 bundle leaked on Amazon France. Bundle includes a 500gb PS4, 2 DualShock 4 controllers, PlayStation Eye and Killzone: Shadow Fall for 499 Euros (same as the standard XB1).

The XB1 is $429 Euros, not $499. That PS4 bundle under current rates in American dollars is $660.
