I want to try this, but would having a Ancient Rockman, Crystal guy or whatever, boarding their drone room, using his lockdown power, then destroying the room to deal with the drones?

Boarding can be awesome, but really tough. On more than one occasion, I had the opposing ship jump away while my dude's were aboard his ship

I have had some really good runs lately and even managed to get the 2nd layout to the Kestrel. I also have started to try and use the crew teleporter, which I think is only worthwhile if you have a mantis or rock dude on your crew. Despite all this though it seems like there is always one thing that goes wrong that kills me when it comes to the flagship.

I've had some success with transporting by having a weapon that will cause a fire (fire bomb or beam); letting their crew get damaged by the fire, and then sending my guys over once their hurt.

Interesting strategy. I'm gonna have to give it a try sometime. I haven't missed with mush fire starting weapons yet.

]Played a really good round today. Made it to the 2nd boss and died. I obliterated the first boss and only took 3 or 4 damage. Immediately attacked the 2nd boss, was getting killed and managed to jump away. The 2nd round I knocked it down to 4 bars left, but eventually they knocked my drones out, their shields recovered and it was only a matter of time. Here's a picture of my ship vs theirs. I thought I grabbed a capture of their 30 drones flying around, but apparently I did not.

Boarding is key. I didn't even have cloaking and I beat that mfer.

                  My ship was

                  Kestrel
                  Shields - Max
                  Engine - Max
Weapons - Artemis Missile, Burst Laser 2, Hull Laser 2, Ion Blast 2
                  Reactor - Max
                  Doors - Max
                  Sensors - Lv2
Full crew. Had 2 Mantis for boarding attacks. Zoltan chilling in Oxygen room for extra power. Engi just running round for repairs and humans manning all the stations.
Drones - 6 Power. Level 2 Attack and Level 1 Defence. These were key to quickly reduce it's super shield while mitigating the damage from the triple rocket blast until I could board and destroy it.

1st attack I find pretty simple now. Just overpower it's shield room with all your firepower at once 3-4 rounds and it'll be done.

2nd attack with Max Shields the drone overload wasn't enough to really bother once I knocked the missile weapon offline. Didn't even bother going after the drone room, just kept unloading on the shields until eventually I got a breach/fire started and it was a slow death.

3rd attack was pretty hard. Had to escape near death, then return with the half hull you get and try it again. Key was immediately getting over to knock off the missile weapon again, but it's super shield came back so I couldn't teleport them back right away. Shifted all my power into shields/engine for evasion and prayed until I could knock it's shield down again. Then warped back, healed the crew and then went after the laser weapon room as not even max shields can slow that thing down. Once down I just had to unload on the hull and that was it.

                  Oh boy.

The federation cruiser seems like a nice ship to start a game with. Has an extra weapon room, starts with 4 crew and a couple are diff species.

Finally beat it on easy. Everything seemed to go my way on this run except that I couldn't find or buy any drones until sector 7. The scrap arm really helps.

                          FTL: Advanced Edition

We’ve been working hard over the summer and are excited to finally officially announce a free expansion, FTL: Advanced Edition! FTL: AE is a huge content addition that includes new weapons, drones, augments, systems, enemies, and more. Here are some details on just a few of the additions visible in the trailer:
                          • Mind Control System: Temporarily turn enemies into allies. Force a boarder to repair the damage they just did, or have the enemy pilot sabotage their own helm.
                          • Hacking System: Lockdown and disrupt enemy systems. Unique effects for each system, ranging from forcing a teleporter remove boarders to making the medbay damage instead of heal.
                          • New Sector and Events: Our writer Tom Jubert has returned along with special guest writer Chris Avellone (of Planescape fame), who managed to find some time for us between his work on Project Eternity and Wasteland 2. They’ve been helping us add a new sector and scatter new events throughout the rest of the game.
New Weapons and Effects: Many new weapons that take advantage of new mechanics: overcharging to increase the number of volleys, stun effects to freeze crew, and area effect targeting, to name a few.
                          • And more systems, drones, augments, enemy ships, enemy layouts, and hostile environments. All of which we’ll be sure to talk about more in the coming weeks!

In addition to new content, we’ve continued to polish FTL and add some of the most requested small features. As a few examples: you’ll be able to save your crew positions and send them back to battle-stations, save and quit during combat, and find more items for purchase in stores.

For the purists out there, FTL vanilla will still be available. All of the new content can be disabled from within the hangar before starting a new game.
