Quit being a bunch of sheep. Formulate your own ideas and opinions.
Quite ironic considering game reviews have more inflation than an Ivy League school and many are paid by the devs/pubs (see Kane and Lynch).

Spec Ops: The Line was a great story driven shooter that barely took six hours to finish but I never noticed. I think Halo 4 took barely four hours and I will agree that it was way too short. I think Gears 2 and 3 clocked in at around 6-8 hours with the first game being shorter than that.

The difference is that both of those games had multiplayer, and in Gears case, was the main point in buying the games.

Since I don't have a PS4 I just watch a LP or Twitch and move along. The story seemed pretty tight, until the ending, but it still wasn't as bad as Dying Light. From what I saw, it seemed to be a rent/not purchase title especially without MP.

The lack of replay value certainly hurts it. I think it would be worth $30, maybe even $40. I bought it day one though and I knew what I was getting into replay wise, but I'm still happy with my purchase. I have Dying Light as well, but have not dove too deep into that one yet (my gf has played the crap out of it though). General consensus is the story isn't that great, but considering it's from the developers of Dead Island, that shouldn't be too much of a surprise. I really like the gameplay in it though. Simple and fun.

Ok, after now playing through the first nine chapters I am thoroughly confused as to what game a lot of these reviewers played? Is this game perfect? Of course not. But man, it is fucking gooooooooooood. Chapter 9 was fucking WOW.

My main gripes so far is that there are more "movie" elements than gameplay, but the story is so intriguing and the combat is so immersive and awesome it doesn't bother me that much. It's not like Gears of War where there is a gun fight every five steps and you wait for the church bell to signal all clear, but when you do have gun fights they are so fucking good. I don't think I've ever been so sucked into a third person game before, with the exception of The Last Of Us of course. My other gripe is the collectibles. I wish there were more. I wish there was more back story to the items you pick up too instead of just picking some of them up and just looking at them.

The guns and the gun play are fucking outstanding. It seems like every new weapon they introduce somehow replaces the previous in levels of awesome. I will sit there and think "Holy fuck, this gun is so unique and bad ass. It has to be one of the coolest weapons I've seen in a game." And then they introduce another new weapon and that one trumps the last.

                  Fuck, this game is good.

I pointed out that despite the reviews, there are many people saying it's a good game.

That's not being defensive. Just pointing out that there seems to be a wide range of opinions.

Personally I'm more inclined to play the game for myself and decide rather than let someone else make up my mind for me. Judging by some of the responses in this thread, review scores are more important actual enjoyment.

I didn't quote you? It's just an overall perception I've gotten regarding the game. Similar to the people that seemed to determine to constantly deride it, there seems to be people doing the internet thing of looking or reasons to love it that either may or may not be there. There are only like, 3 people that post in the Arcade regularly anymore, and I typically know their opinion to most stuff by now...so I tend to think and refer to things in a broader sense. Sorry for the confusion.

And I stand by my idea that of course people that paid $60 for the game are going to be more inclined to like it.

Also, who exactly are you referring to when you're talking about reviews in this thread? The only person I see talking about reviews is Twigg, which is fine, but the presumption you seem to be making is that there are loads of people writing the game off because of the reviews.

I don't see at any point in any of my posts where I say that people should trust reviews over playing games (I don't). Hell, one of the threads I started here way back when was a "guilty" pleasure game, which was either bad games you love or games you love that got poor reviews.

It's a 100% legit observation, not a perception. Go to any other internet board or forum. Gamefaqs is probably the largest gaming forum on the planet. The board for this game is littered with threads and posts of "Avoid this game because the reviews are terrible and it's only five hours long." Almost 100% of those people have never played the game and at most watched some preview vids or a few minutes of a gaming stream of it being played. Then you have the handful of the threads of people talking about how much they enjoy the game and what it is about the game that they like so much. Those threads are of course met with the predictable responses from the same people that made the "Avoid this game" threads with responses like "You're just a Sony pony. This game is horrible. Stop defending it. Stop sucking RAD's dick, you know this game is horrible."

So is there an overwhelming amount of people "defending" an alleged "bad" game or are there just an unbelievable amount of haters jumping on the negative hate train set in motion of the myriad shitty reviews and low review scores?

But back to my opinion of the game. I finished Chapter 11 last night. It was probably the longest chapter of the game (which followed one of the shortest-chapter 10 which was basically just a five minute cut scene) and required a ton of stealth. It was an excellent chapter and introduced yet another, and the last, new weapon. The stealth stuff is actually done very well. If you do get spotted it's an instant death (it makes perfect sense considering the story at that point) but the game loads unbelievably quickly and you don't have to replay much.

The following has a bunch of spoilers so don't read unless you have at least completed chapter 11.

Fuck that mfer Lucan. I knew he was a fucking snake and I was just waiting for his bitch ass to stab me in the back. It was also pretty sweet confirming who Jack the Ripper is.

LOL at this game taking five or six hours. I have to be around eight or more hours and I still have five chapters to go. Hopefully I'll have it wrapped up by the end of the week.

Well, I was talking about in this thread, as he said "Judging by some of the responses in this thread, review scores are more important actual enjoyment." That was what I was taking issue with, regarding the part that you bold. Certainly taking the rest of the internet into account, you will find stalwart defenders/attackers to the point of irrationality on both sides.

Ok, I finished this last night. The last five chapters only took a little over an hour because most of it was movies and a fairly short end battle.

I still love the game but I was very unimpressed how those last handful of chapters played out. I thought the story was interesting but I really wish there were more action sequences. It's almost like they were short on time to get the game shipped and just kind of rushed the end.

Overall I would still say the game is an 8/10. I'm glad I bought it and enjoyed my playthrough.

Did you platinum it as well? Looks like a very easy platinum that can be done with one playthrough.

I'm going to assume this is a rhetorical question...

Technically you can't do it in one play through. There's a part at the end of Chapter 11 where a cut scene triggers after a short amount of time and it is impossible to collect all of the collectibles in that area. I only needed two more so I just loaded that actual checkpoint and picked up the last two items. Ding! Platinum!
