So it's an MMO? I really haven't read anything about it.
Couldn't they just have called it FF: A Realm Reborn? I am so ready for them to drop the numbers!
Yeah it's an MMORPG and is actually a relaunch of the original FF 14, which came out in September 2010 but was widely criticized for a number of flaws. So they scrapped the whole team and a new team is behind this relaunch, which has been getting some pretty favorable reviews and hype. I think phase 3 of the beta starts Friday, so a lot of people have already been playing a little bit of it.

Are you a big MMO fan? I only ask because perhaps you can tell me how the FF MMO's differ from regular ones (I only ask because I dislike the WoW MMO style). I would be interested in something like this under the right circumstances. How do they do combat? Is it like FF13?
Don't mean to barrage with questions, but the Japanese-style MMO has always seemed weirdly more appealing to me. And I'm currently trying to get into FF13, so I'm curious about all of that.
Awww, this is going to suck. Why do they think they need to "innovate" FF, the tried and true archetype worked perfectly through 10 and they just trashed it, essentially driving Square to near bankruptcy in the mid-2000's.

I would say counting on one franchise and making bad decisions on most of the others drove them into the ground. And while Final Fantasy 6 is firmly implanted in my top 10 games ever....I don't want more games like that either.

They have other games, but FF is their bread and butter, and turning it into the ADD riddled "FF XIV" was awful, almost as bad as X-2. Coincidentally all the most popular Square games, Chrono Trigger/Cross, Vagrant Story, Super Mario RPG, Legend of Mana, etc. were all Turn-Based JRPGs.

Binary Domain is awesome
I get what you're saying, I'm just saying that it's not like this was an easy fix for Square. JRPGs don't sell in the US, and they really aren't going to anymore. They wanted to try and find a way to be successful in Japan AND in the US. It hasn't worked as well as they had hoped.

They would, but it would require a total overhaul of the writing of the games, as FF is geared towards that early-mid adult audience. Creating FFXIV felt like a cross of a shitty Japanese Anime and Kingdom Hearts.
