It's a PC running a version of Linux that was designed by Valve to make it easier for you to play Steam games on your TV, but you don't have to hook it up to a TV. I imagine it's like other Linux distros and isn't just limited to games.Comment

intel cpu with 3.20 ghz 4 cores. 15.6 gigs of ram, gtx 780 gpu with 3 gigs video mem
So I can buy this thing and then pay for all my games again to run on Linux? The king was shaken. He went up to the room over the gateway and wept.

So would I TBH, but there are people who don't care or know how to build a PC.
Ultimately, this is a way for Valve to attract people from the console market with a small form PC and also give an incentive for developers/publishers to port their games to Linux.Comment

i dont really see the value in this machine. if you want to be a pc gamer, then you will own a pc to do it. if you simply want to play games, then wouldnt you just choose the consoles which have all those extras like blue ray, social media, netflix ect....
to me, this seems like a bad idea
plus, the linux OS....forget having to re pay for games on linux, but arent all games designed for windows or mac? the biggest drawback to running a linux only OS was that you still have to have windows to play games. has that changed since 2 years ago?Comment

No one who plays in the console market exclusively is going to want this. It's a computer you plug in to your TV and comes with a fancy gamepad. You can already plug a computer in to their TV. This thing costs as much a computer and acts like a computer. Will a Linux based OS be more stable than Windows? Sure. However, it's still an OS on a computer. It's still the same as what you put in to a desktop, just in a smaller case.
The reason people justify an expensive computer is that it does things other than just video games. People use them or work and other things. Gaming is simply an added portion, thus, it's justified. The Steambox, OTOH, is being marketed as a console replacement, primarily for video games. But it's too expensive. This is a dumb business move by Steam and there really isn't much of a market for it. Anyone who is that interested in PC gaming is going to want to build their own.The king was shaken. It's not for sale...there is no marketing....it's a beta for valve to get feedback. Valve is more concerned with the OS...that's how they will make their money. You guys think u have it all figured out when Valve hasn't even planned a solid strategy yet.Comment
