[WiiU] Nintendo Network ID and unified eShop wallet for 3DS!

It's about damn time Nintendo. So now you'll be able to use the same gamer tag you have on the WiiU on your 3DS, instead of the stupid friend codes. Also, instead of having separate shops on the devices there will be one and your wallet will work with both. MiiVerse is also coming to the 3DS.

A year and a half ago, Hideko Konno hinted that Nintendo's Miiverse might eventually find its way to the 3DS. Now it finally has. The stereoscopic handheld's latest update is a doozy, not only brining the quirky social network to the dual screen, but integrating the handheld into its unified account system too. This is more significant than it sounds -- it's Nintendo's first major step towards unifying its fragmented eShop system, which currently maintains different storefronts for both the Wii U and 3DS devices. The console-specific eShops had their own separated digital wallets too, a frustration finally relieved by sharing funds through the linked Nintendo Network ID. The update does a decent job of walking users through the account linking process, and explains that credit card information, Club Nintendo details and even Mii data (when used in Miiverse) will be handled through the unified Network ID moving forward. The Miiverse app works just like its Wii U counterpart. Players can launch the sharing community in-game by pressing the system's home button and tapping on the Miiverse icon, which takes them directly to the relevant game's community. From here, text, doodles and screenshots can be shared in the normal fashion -- and yes, some shared screenshots (like those from The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds) are even 3D. Nintendo says the update also provides minor tweaks for stability and user experience, including removing the limit on 3DS system transfers and requiring users to press L and R simultaneously to toggle the camera (a move designed to prevent accidental launches). All in all, the 3DS winter update seems solid, if long overdue. Planning to check it out? You may want to wait until morning, users on Twitter say that Nintendo's servers are a bit overloaded.

And in other news, we need a DS and/or 3DS tag.

I really need to get a 3ds again. Regret selling it so much.

Hey, I was considering buying a Nintendo DS, I was wondering if it was really worth it to spend the extra money on the 3DS or will the DS light or other DS versions (other then 3DS) do? Most of the games I would play on the console would be your pokemon, Mario types, and maybe so other adventure, strategy types. Thank you in advance for your answers and if you want any extra details just ask.

I haven't checked in a while. What is the price difference? I know if you were thinking of going online with any game the 3DS would be your only option as Mr Bill posted a few days ago that Nintendo is ending the wi-fi networks for the older consoles like the DS. Plus, the 3DS is backwards compatible so you could still play DS games on it if you wanted to. The only issue is that if you get the XL the screen may be blown up too much and not look nearly as crisp as it would on a DS.

Now if we can just get to a world where our Virtual Console purchases can be played universally at the very least between the Wii and 3DS.

            But no, Nintendo 'gon Nintendo.

Tell me about it! Wombat is always talking about that on the CAGcast. There is absolutely no reason why I shouldn't be able to play SMB on all my Nintendo devices.

I bought my 3DS specifically for the new Pokémon games (which can only be played on the 3DS), and it turned out to be a totally justifiable purchase. The Lego games are always fun (I've got Harry Potter 1-4 & 5-7, Star Wars, LoTR, Lego City Undercover), and I've picked up a couple of other games when Best Buy or Toys R Us has them on sale (which seems to be almost always). Very good purchase, and I definitely recommend the 3DS.
