[ALL] remember when people used to wet themselves over sports game releases?

today is mlb 14 the show day and there is very little activity surrounding it. not just here, but in general. i remember when i used to hunt down the newest madden release. going from store to store to see who had it first. waiting for the dicks at ebgames to make their run to kentucky just so they could start selling the game that night.

they wanted to play it too so they were all about making that drive from cleveland to lexington. now, its like nobody really care. myself included.

i might buy the show today, but i have not bought a sports game since 2011. its basically a genre thats so watered down with the yearly release thats mainly a roster update.

i guess the point of this thread is to see how people feel about sports games compared to how they did 10 years ago

Some points are valid. I think the lack of MLB the show is that people have a PS4 now so why buy it on PS3...especially when there is no trade up program. Everyone is just waiting. Am I right?

Sony dropped the ball on this one. Considering the versions weren't releasing day and date with each other , it would have made perfect sense for them to make The Show another $10 upgrade game. Buy the PS3 version for $60 now and download the digital PS4version when it eventually releases. It seems like they could've gained more sales than lost them.

This isn't your typical release, and baseball games are typically more #niche anyway. I get your larger point but aside from looking forward to picking it up after work I've never felt a sense of giddiness on Show release day.

I do miss the old NCAA/Madden release day jitters though. Waking up before the mall opens, or better yet, standing in line at midnight.

          My phase of sports games.

          -Loved franchise mode.
          - Then I got internet and could never play single player again. The CPU always sucked. Only played online games.
-Then I was introduced to online league games. Then after that even playing people online for fun became stale.
          - Once leagues fell apart, nothing interested me again.

I wonder how much digital downloads factor into this these days?

Agreed. Sony had a chance to hit a home run with this release if they had put a $10 digital download coupon for the PS4 version in the box or had it available as a $10 upgrade for people that bought the PS3 digital version. Granted you can go buy the PS3 version and then sell it back and effectively make it that but it's just not as clean.

I will still play Madden, FIFA and NBA 2K, but, they don't dominate my time like they used to. Other than Uncharted, I only played sports games. Now, most of my time is spent playing genre's other than sports.

I think part of it has to do with the watered down franchise modes in the games. I like playing FPS online, RPGs online, but, sports games - I actually like to play solo franchise and developers have seemed to strip sports games of any depth in these modes. So now, I just arrange little tournaments, historic rosters, etc. for myself.

I had to schedule an extra person during the morning/afternoon on the Madden release this year. Still had a good showing at the Gamestop at the mall, and plenty of people came down to grab lunch before hitting the road. Plenty of people are still wetting themselves over it, just not here. We all get the game, play in our leagues and that's that.

I used to stand in line at midnight for NCAA and Madden. That's been the bad part of being in the GC program... I have it a week or so before. While that's all good I still miss the old days sometimes. Last few years I have ran launch tournaments at Gamestop.

They fixed waiting in line now, too. You go at 6 pm, stand in a line full of 10 people, pay the game and get your number. You can go out to eat, drink or go home and come back and get that spot in line. I know the GS people at the Mall, and I just close that night and do some work in our office, they let me in right before midnight.

One thing not discussed s how online sites like Amazon can get you the game on launch day eliminating the need to deal with a retail store.

You get those fans who have to have it now and will pay 2x for it. They still know they will at least get $60 on May 6th and maybe even $120 from you by May 6. Also this time you can transfer saves to next gen, so getting it 2x, while $$$ isn't out of the question.

There is plenty of hype/excitement for The Show over at OS. I think it's just this place.
