The NHL 15 Next-Gen Hockey Player video can be summed up with one phrase- it's all in the details. With the step up to the next console generation, player facial models will look more detailed and like their real-life counterpart. We will also see enhancements in the stadium and the crowd, but dynamic cloth is the detail that I am talking about. It is a small thing in terms of a game, but that one detail adds many layers of realism to the game.
If your player gets laid out with a bone-crushing hit, you should see and feel the pain of that. If your player scores the game-winning goal in a tie game, you should share in the jubilation. In other video game genres, we have seen story-driven narratives take over, such as the decision-making tree in the Mass-Effect trilogy, or the interactive story that was Heavy Rain. These narratives place you in the game and want you to have empathy with characters and share in the emotion, It seems that the NHL team is trying to harness your emotions, which is great for a fast-paced sport like hockey.
There are still some Gameplay Series left to go, and I am personally looking forward to hearing some of the new commentary. I love Gary Thorne especially as an Orioles fan, but after six years of commentary, it is time for a change. I can't wait to see what NHL 15 has in store with Doc Emrick and Eddie Olczyk.
