Thomas Gives 5 Items for NBA Live 15

NBA Live 15 marked my return to basketball gaming. I was a huge Live player back from 2002-2005, and before that, Kobe Bryant’s Courtside had my interest on the N64. I spent many hours creating teams in that game to try different combinations to see what would do best.

NBA Live 14, after all of the updates, certainly represents a playable experience. The hallmarks of the Live franchise- graphics, presentation and simple controls, are present here. This was a franchise that has just returned, and I think many of the things needed to improve will come with time. As the old saying goes, Rome was not built in a day, and neither will after the time away from development.

Most of my time has been spent playing pickup games, and just starting a dynasty, so that is where most of my comments are going to be coming from.

It's a solid game that will only get better with subsequent releases. I like having competition in the sports-gaming genre, and I think if nothing else, you could root for NBALive because of that. It might encourage 2K to come back with their NHL series, or maybe EA goes back to MVP Baseball.

People also have the tendency to dump on games that have had releases cancelled and been stuck in "development hell." Too Human is a perfect example of that.

The thing that most impressed me about NBA Live 14 was the dedication of the dev team to the game once it was released. It obviously had problems at launch and in a rare move, the team posted a letter to the public and owned it. Then proceeded to create a couple of updates that made the game infinitely better and more playable.

It doesn't hurt the NBA Live team that 2K seriously dropped the ball with 2K14 being almost unplayable online and having problems with lost career saves, etc. This fall could be a good time for basketball gamers with 2 talented development teams working to get their business.

This news broke earlier this morning....obviously not good for the NBA Live team though they are so far along in the cycle for this years game that the short term impact should be minimal.

Im a 2k guy , but I believe live has a chance this year because of the face scans, and if they tune the post game up. The d was bad too, you could not even move when you put your hands up

I wish the Live team nothing but success, but after reading about MyLeague for 2k15, Live will pretty much have to be free for me to play it this year.

I absolutely agree 2k14 got it wrong on the PS4/Xbox1 ... but they have moved quickly to correct it.

Now ... my next hope - a customizable soundtrack like MLB The Show on the PS3.

I completely forgot about the defense. I do like that steals are difficult even for highly rated guys in that area.....though it could be because I suck. Post game definitely needs to be tuned up.

You have to give Live credit, because they are at least trying. They could easily mail it in, or not even try to come out with NBA Live, but they did. They've worked really hard to improve it, and people forget that it basically started from scratch and I expect to see a massive improvement. It's hard to start from scratch, as evidenced by EA not getting back into MVP Baseball despite the opportunity after 2K dropped their MLB series. I personally think they are seeing how they do with Live and getting that back on track before they start thinking about MVP.

Madden got it wrong too, they corrected it after the debacle 360 launch. There's also MLB The Show shipping each year with an online mode that doesn't work half of the time, killing leagues here at VSN. I could see 2K going either way, but I think both development teams are motivated- Live to capitalize on a less-than-stellar 2K experience, and 2K is motivated to put that release behind them. Competition could give us two great basketball games this year.

The sad part is they didn't have to start from scratch. NBA Live 10 was a very good game and had a foundation worth building on. I agree it wasn't perfect, but Live always had something 2k didn't have ... responsiveness. I know I'm probably describing it less than perfectly, but 2k never felt as responsive as Live. Don't get me wrong, I love 2k and buy it every year, but to this day I can't play that north-south camera. It feels too slow for my tastes.

Maybe they didn't have to start from scratch on how they approached the gameplay and features but they had to start over with new code for next gen consoles.

                        You think so?

                        Clearly the Madden guys didn't.

The only ones that might not be are EA SPORTS PGA and Hockey. Doubtful though... Rebuilds from scratch take several years typically.
