Why is Monster Hunter games rated so low in U.S. yet hits in Japan?

I hear how these games sell like hotcakes in JPN, yet when I look at the metacritic scores they are in the low 70's (overall). What is it that makes this game unique or fun? I'm hoping to get these games on Ebay or during a sale.

      sorry Monster Hunter Freedom....

edit: looking at the scores in depth...Gamespot seems to give them very low scores....a 6.5 and 5 (for MHF 2). I don't really trust GS scores anymore since the scandal.

IDK either but i'll see if i can get ahold of it tommorow and I'll write up an unbiased review is it a turnbased game or a realtime game?

I read it's realtime strategy but someone said weapon switching isn't realtime (whatever that means).

edit: I'm guessing you have to pause the game to switch weapons, not just pressing the directional buttons.

I have a friend that's in love with Monster Hunter. I would compare it to a WoW-Lite or maybe even a Phantasy Star Online? I haven't seen it in a while, though.

Well on second thought I probably wont see what its like I'm just desperate for something to be fun on the psp... Ace combat-Skies of Deception(just like the ps2 games), Hot shots golf 2 and God of war are the best Ive found so far...

I've bought several titles in the last month. So far I've only played 3 games (trying to get far i them before starting another game). Resistance: Retribution is a fun 3rd person shooter. Also MLB 09 The Show (with updated rosters) is fun; I've only been playing exhibition games on it. Finally, I also have been playing Pursuit Force. It's a fast pace arcade style action game.

Checked out Ace Combat on Gamespot and Youtube. Seems interesting....not much into simulation plane games but I've been wanting to try different games on my PSP. I wasn't a Resistance fan but enjoy the PSP version. Also picked up Loco Roco 2 and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII for different styles of games I don't have on PS3 and 360.

I played a lil retribution a week or two ago and couldnt get into but I figured Id give it another shot. Im not much into the simulation flying games either but ace combat is fairly acradeish on the psp but minus the controls it is just like the ps2 game.

Same reason why the 360 is a hit over here but not in Japan.

I'm sure their loyalty to sony doesn't factor in at all

I picked it up used at GS two days ago. Just finished playing it for the 1st time for about 45 minutes. This game isn't hard but it's very "sloww" in the beginning. I read some post on youtube about how it takes a couple of hours before it gets "good." I'm going to keep it, so I have a rpg game in my PSP library. I don't even think this game has an ending....the manual says you can replay the quests as many times that you want. I hope I stick to it, so I can get to the action packed monsters (like on youtube).
