Game 4, Year 2: Cincinnati Bengals at Baltimore Ravens

    20 -- 2-2
    00 -- 2-2

Bengals FB Jacob Hester takes a handoff and plows through the Ravens' line for a 1-yard touchdown with just 0:04 remaining in the first half giving Cincinnati a 14-0 lead going into the break. The 2009 Pro Bowler rushed for a season-high 96 yards on 25 carries during the team's upset win in Baltimore.

    SWEET REVENGE

Bengals use conservative power attack to stun Ravens in 20-0 shutout victory | Just two weeks after falling to AFC North rival, Cincinnati's adjusted gameplan gives Baltimore fits | Former Ravens defensive ends Bannan and Edwards come up big for Bengals | Through four games, team matches last season's win total

The Cincinnati Bengals, two weeks after being demolished 38-9 at home by the Ravens, marched into Baltimore and defeated their division rivals 20-0 Sunday afternoon at M&T Bank Stadium. Bengals head coach Mike Martz used a much more conservative approach in playing the Ravens this time around, running the ball a season-high 45 times during the game. Bengals FB Jacob Hester was the main cog in the team's offense, gaining 96 yards on 25 carries, including a 1-yard touchdown run just before halftime which made the score 14-0.

"The last time we played these guys we threw the ball over 50 times and I thought that played right into their hands," said Martz.

"We ended up turning the ball over 7 times and when you play a team like the Ravens, they're a team that feasts on those sorts of things. We weren't going to let their defense beat us this time around so we decided to work the running game and the short passing game. We did a great job of sustaining long drives and converting our third downs."

The story of the game was the Bengals defense. The team held Baltimore to just one 3rd down conversion as the Ravens finished just 1 of 9 on third downs for the day. Former Baltimore Ravens defensive ends Justin Bannan and Dwan Edwards, signed during the free agent signing period by the Bengals to play in their newly installed 3-4 alignment, each played a pivotal role in stopping the Ravens rushing attack and each contributed a sack during the contest. Due to the Ravens' inability to convert third downs and the Bengals' offensive gameplan, Baltimore possessed the ball for only 14 minutes during the game while gaining just 152 total offensive yards during the game.

"We went with some pretty exotic schemes this time around, mixing up our personnel packages and just playing good, sound defense," said Bengals defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel.

Bengals QB Carson Palmer had an efficient performance, finishing 19 of 21 for 186 yards and 1 touchdown. His leading receiver was WR Chad Ochocinco, who had 60 yards on 5 receptions.

"I think we caught them peeking a little bit ahead to their big game next week against Pittsburgh," said Palmer.

"You can't do that in this league."

Cincinnati (2-2) will now travel to face Kansas City (2-2) next week at Arrowhead Stadium. The Bengals defeated the Chiefs 27-21 in overtime last season at home to pick up their first victory of the 2009 season following an 0-14 start.

Dang nice win. Hester really earned his paycheck. I could see him making another trip to Hawaii at the end of the season. Defense really stepped up and dominated there. Will Dane be ahead of Jacory Ford on the depth chart at wide receiver? Good luck against the chiefs

Hester is definitely a workhorse. I need to continue to get him more involved.

I think for now Dane will remain ahead of Ford on the depth chart since he is the better overall receiver. However I will get Ford some playing time on offense and try to get some deep plays to him since he is my fastest WR.

          Thanks for checking in!

Just read the last two game reports. Tough luck against the Bucs. I was about to comment to you that it seems you are more focused on the pass (obviously with Martz) and it seemed to be hurting you. Then I scrolled down and noticed you changed it up against Baltimore. Nice win against the Ravens. 2:1 run to pass ratio is very nice. You were obviously moving the ball well on the ground and it was nice to see Hester show that pro bowl form. He was a really nice pickup from San Diego.

Bannan looked like he was shedding blocks left and right. 4 TFLs is a damn good indication that he was beating his man early and often throughout the afternoon. Mays also looks like he is starting to contribute more on the defense. He appeared to have a rough go of it for the first few weeks. Looking forward to seeing how everything plays out in the AFC North!

Definitely trying to establish some sort of running game. I can't afford to get into shootouts every week.

Bannan is really an amazing run stuffer. He is nearly unblockable on run plays. I am using a heavy rotation along the line. Bannan is in on run downs when I use the 3-4 and Michael Johnson is being used as an edge rusher when we use the 4-3.

We have a chance to string together some wins here.

As always, thanks for the feedback!

Game 5, Year 2: Cincinnati Bengals at Kansas City Chiefs

                    24 -- 2-3
                    37 -- 3-2

Quick Recap: Bengals QB Carson Palmer threw two 4th quarter interceptions and the team's defense was unable to get key third down stops on their way to losing 37-24 Sunday to the Chiefs. Kansas City QB Matt Cassel was on fire, finishing the day 16 of 21 for 243 yards and 3 touchdown passes.

The Bengals, who at one point led 10-0, was able to pull within a 27-24 deficit when Palmer found WR Dane Looker wide open down the seam for a 27-yard touchdown with 13:33 remaining in the game. However on the Chiefs' ensuing possession, Cassel led a 9-play drive which culminated with a 12-yard touchdown run by RB Javarris Williams to all but put the game away at 34-24. The key play of the drive was a back-breaking 33-yard run by RB Jamaal Charles on 3rd and 16 from the Chiefs' own 25-yard line.

Palmer would throw his first interception of the game on the following possession to CB Brandon Carr with just under 8 minutes remaining which would result in a Chiefs field goal that made the score 37-24 with 5:13 to go. Palmer would throw his second interception on a desperation heave to the endzone with 13 seconds remaining to Chiefs SS Bernard Pollard.

Cincinnati (2-3) will host Houston (1-3) in two weeks following a BYE week.

Tough loss man. Hopefully you'll bounce back next week. Another stellar performance from Chad though! Jerome Harrison looked good too.

Yeah I wish I could have gotten Harrison more involved and at least past the 100-yard mark. His stats are a bit misleading though, he busted a 70-yarder early in the game. He was still good on the other 8 carries.

Chad is on fire. He must want a raise. ;)

As they usually do in this game. Mistakes definitely come back to bite, especially on All-Madden.

You got back to Martz-ball against the Chiefs with 43 passes. Ochocinco looked to be dominant on the field. I don't think I have had a receiver with a dozen catches...ever. Pretty impressive performance there. Tough luck about the turnovers late and the big gain on 3rd and 16. Definitely back breakers there.

Jerome Harrison looked like he was in a groove in the run game. 96 yards on just 9 carries. Any reason why he didn't get more touches? It looks like Spiller and Harrison had something going on the ground. Bernard Scott has struggled a bit this season. Any thoughts on what may be causing that? Looking forward to the Houston game!

Yeah we threw the ball far too much to expect to win. Gotta get more balanced. It was just one of those games where it was difficult to sustain the running game once we got behind.

Harrison had a great day but his stellar production is somewhat misleading. Most of his yardage came on a 70-yard run he had early in the game. He wasn't as spectacular the rest of the way but we certainly should have gotten him the ball more.

Not sure what the story is on Scott. He hasn't been playing as well as he did last season. He may just be going through a sophomore slump.

Thanks for the good luck wish against Houston. ;)

First, he caught a 49-yard touchdown pass from QB Carson Palmer which made the score 14-6 with 3:26 remaining in the period. BOTTOM: On the ensuing kickoff, Looker forces 2010 #5 overall draft pick WR/KR Jordan Shipley to fumble on the return and it gets scooped up by Bengals rookie first round pick CB Joe Haden. Cincinnati would capitalize with a 42-yard Shayne Graham field goal to make the score 17-6 with just under two minutes remaining in the quarter.

WR LOOKER, ROOKIE FS MAYS STAR IN BENGALS' 24-13 WIN OVER HOUSTON

Looker's third quarter touchdown reception and special teams forced fumble loom huge as Cincinnati improves to 3-3 | QB Palmer has another stellar performance, tosses for 265 yards and three touchdowns | Rookie first round pick Mays catches first career interception and records first career sack

The Cincinnati Bengals defeated the Houston Texans 24-13 Sunday at home to improve to .500 on the year with a 3-3 record. Bengals QB Carson Palmer had a stellar day, going 19 of 25 for 265 yards and three touchdowns leading Cincinnati to their third win of the year, which already tops last year's win total of two.

The turning point in the game came in the third quarter. Palmer found WR Dane Looker on a quick pass in which the 34-year-old veteran wideout turned into a 49-yard touchdown which made the score 14-6 with 3:26 left to go in the quarter. Looker, signed after the team's week two loss to Baltimore to take the place of injured WR Shaun McDonald, would make another big play soon thereafter.

On the ensuing kickoff following his touchdown, Looker would strip Texans first round pick Jordan Shipley of the football and Bengals first round pick Joe Haden would recover giving Cincinnati prime field position. The team would score a few plays later on a 42-yard Shayne Graham field goal which made the score 17-6 with just under two minutes remaining in the third quarter, giving Cincinnati a comfortable lead.

"Dane is a scrappy player and I think his presence alone is huge for this team," said Bengals head coach Mike Martz.

"He is just one of those guys that you have to have on your team. He makes big plays when you least expect it."

The Bengals' other first round pick, 6th overall draft choice FS Taylor Mays, finally made his mark after a slow start to his rookie campaign. The former USC Trojan caught his first career interception late in the third quarter off Texans QB Kyle Boller, who was subbing in for an injured Matt Schaub who missed most of the game with a sprained ankle suffered early in the second quarter. On the Texans' very next offensive series following the pick, Mays collected the first sack of his career, coming in on a safety blitz and bringing down Boller for a loss of six yards.

"No question it was great to see Taylor get in there and make a few big plays for us. It was a long time coming but we expect to see him continue to get better and blossom into the star we know he can become," said Bengals defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel.

"This defense has really come together and now it is just a matter of continuing to gel and getting some consistency."

Cincinnati (3-3) will now travel to take on winless Buffalo (0-7) next week on Halloween.

Notes: Bengals FB Jacob Hester (dislocated shoulder) and RB C.J. Spiller (dislocated elbow) each left the game early in the first quarter with injuries however both are expected to be available for next week's game...Texans DE Mario Williams missed the game with a torn quadriceps injury.
