    Sun, 6 Mar 2011 11:42:49 -0700
Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports that the Cincinnati Bengals have reached an agreement with Bears free agent FS Craig Steltz (75 overall) on a 5-year $17.5 million contract that includes $5.45 in guaranteed money. "Craig is a smart player and should come in right away and compete for a spot in the lineup," said Bengals G.M. D.Geezy. "We feel like he is an up and coming player. He will likely play strong safety for us where our pro scouting staff projects him as an 80 overall." The 2007 LSU graduate was said to be recruited heavily by his former college teammate, Bengals FB Jacob Hester.

Nice pickup in Steltz, DGZ. Fits well as an in the box guy opposite Mays. Lawson would be a nice addition to that D, as well.

Great signing with Steltz. With him and Mays in the secondary, it should be pretty solid.

"Manny is as versatile of a defensive player as I have ever seen and I think coach Crennel is going to have fun using this guy all over the field," said Bengals G.M. D.Geezy.

            Thanks men...

Its been a pretty successful signing period thus far. I feel like we have signed some good bargain players who should come in and contribute right away. It's key to not overspend in free agency or fall in love with an OVR rating. Both of the signings so far are likely to start.

Steltz will move to SS where he is rated an 80. I like him because he had the best AWR rating of any safety in free agency with a 76 and the best play recognition rating at an 83. That is a big plus and he should never be out of position in coverage.

Also gotta love Manny Lawson. We're moving strictly to a 3-4 next season (Patriots playbook) and his 89 speed is going to look nice coming off the edge. Our quartet of linebackers now looks pretty formidable. Romeo Crennel is going to have fun with this 6-6 247 pound physical specimen.

Airbdes - You have to edit the injury slider from the main menu. It isn't within franchise mode, instead it is associated with your user profile.

I like the deal for Curtis. Should provide a solid 1-2 combo with Ochocinco. I also liked the signing of Manny Lawson. Now that you are transitioning to a 3-4 exclusively, I think your ability to create pressure and generate sacks will go up. Lawson and Gholston should see a bump in production.

Interested to see what you do with your first rounder though. Maybe take someone on the line with the loss of Sims? That was a toug loss, I don't know his OVR, but, his STR rating was relatively high.

I'm not sure either which direction I am going to go. I have my eye on about 4 guys at 4 different position. It is going to come down to best player available likely.

I like to go into the draft with no desperate needs so that I don't have to reach for a particular position. I fill all of my holes with at least adequate free agent help which enables me to take the best player available come draft time.

The draft preview will be posted in the next couple of days if you'd like to try to take another stab at predicting the route we'll go.

Thanks man...I'm pretty satisfied with the results so far. I'm basically done as far as adding starters/big contributor types. Now is the time to focus on areas to improve depth and getting ready for the draft.

I sure hope so. With Lawson and Gholston coming off the edge along with DE Michael Johnson (82 overall, 86 speed) wreaking havoc, we should be able to put up some great sack stats in 2011.

Love the Bowman signing. He should provide quality depth in the secondary. I would go with Smith over Hill. I have him in my franchise as a backup and he has been pretty solid plus he's got nice speed. Man if those receivers progress the Ravens could have a frightening passing attack.

There's going to be some money considerations involved there. Smith wants a good bit more than Hill and we're running low on cash.

I do like Smith's speed though but Hill has some high ratings in the low range and mid range pass ratings. I really don't know which direction I am going to go in.

Basically what the "workout" means is that probably on my lunch break or later this evening I am going to sit down and analyze the ratings of each category, compare it to the QBs I had last year backing up Palmer, and analyze the money. Tough decision.

Hill beat out fellow former 49ers QB Alex Smith (71 overall) in a private workout conducted earlier in the day. Hill re-joins Bengals head coach Mike Martz, who was the offensive coordinator for the 49ers in 2008. According to sources, the team was impressed with Hill's accuracy in the short to medium passing game and also his lower salary demands played a factor in the decision. Smith was reportedly looking for a deal in the $2.2 million per year range which was too much for the Bengals' tight salary cap budget.
