      Editor's Note

With preseason set to begin, I would like to take this time to remind readers of this franchise's Preseason Rules (Full franchise rules are on page 1):

      Preseason Player Transaction Rules

      - 55 man roster can be carried starting with the beginning of the free agency signing period and going into the start of the NFL preseason.

      - Must cut down to 47 players +1 Emergency Quarterback after preseason game #4

      - Free agents can be signed at will without penalty who are either a.) rated lower than the lowest rated player on the Bengals' active roster at their respective position at the end of the off-season free agent signing period or b.) were on the Bengals active roster at some point during the current season. Two days must be skipped at the start of following season's free agency period for every player that is signed that has the same or a higher rating than a player on the Bengals depth chart at their respective position at any point between the start of the preseason and the end of the current season's Pro Bowl.
      - All free agents signed during this time period must be signed to a one-year contract.

Yes, only caveat is, they don't take the $310k minimal that you can sign your draft choices to which is quite frustrating when you're like me and treading close to the cap.

Preseason Game 1, Year 3: Denver Broncos at Cincinnati Bengals

Note: The following is a brief summary of the Bengals' August 12, 2011 preseason game versus Denver. Normal full-scale reporting will be reinstituted at the start of the 2011 regular season.

              10 -- 0-1
              13 -- 1-0

Summary: The Cincinnati Bengals defeated the Denver Broncos at home 13-10 Friday night in their preseason opener. Bengals QB Carson Palmer led an 11-play 73-yard drive which took up the game's first 7 minutes and culminated with a 4-yard touchdown pass to RB C.J Spiller on Cincinnati's opening possession. Palmer played just one series on the night, going 5 of 5 for 61 yards and a touchdown before giving way to back-up QB Shaun Hill.

Hill, in his first game as a Bengal, was 9 of 15 for 89 yards with 1 interception, though that turnover came on a desperation 4th down conversion attempt in the first half. Hill would however lead Cincinnati on a drive that ended with a field goal on the final play of the 1st half to make the score 10-3 to cap off his night.

The surprise star of the game was rookie QB Tyrod Taylor, a 6th round pick out of Virginia Tech. Taylor, who played the entire second half, went 11 of 11 for 101 yards and led a 16-play 69-yard drive which took up a whopping 10 minutes and 41 seconds on the Bengals' first 2nd half possession. The drive ended with a field goal to put Cincinnati up 13-3.

Taylor's favorite target was rookie second round pick WR Michael Floyd, who finished with a game-high 6 receptions for 78 yards in his first professional action.

Floyd's former Notre Dame teammate, WR Golden Tate, would score on a 7-yard touchdown pass from Broncos QB Kyle Orton with just over 10 minutes remaining to make the score 13-10. But after trading possessions, Taylor led Cincinnati on a 10-play drive that took up the game's final 6:42 to give Cincinnati the win.

Cincinnati (1-0) will host QB Matt Hasselbeck and the Carolina Panthers (0-1) next week at home.

Yeah he was pretty impressive and much more accurate than I expected. It will be interesting to see if this continues for him. I may give him more P.T. in this next game and maybe some time with the starters.

Love the tyrod taylor pickup and he looks to actually be doing alright surprisingly enough. The offense looked pretty good. It'll be interesting to see who emerges as the premier running back. I would say it looks like Spiller has the edge right now. Great stuff man. Good luck in your next game!

Like the others stated solid game for Taylor, didn't imagine him being a great pro prospect, but playing behind Palmer could help him stock. Michael Floyd is going to be a beast for you for many years. Give this man a few years to develop and he will be your #1 target..guy has all the attributes needed to be a star. I'm excited to see who wins the running back battle..thus far no one is standing out to me, we still have three games though until we need to make a decision. Keep up the great work dude.

Preseason Game 2, Year 3: Carolina Panthers at Cincinnati Bengals

Note: The following is a brief summary of the Bengals' August 18, 2011 preseason game versus Carolina. Normal full-scale reporting will be reinstituted at the start of the 2011 regular season.

                      20 -- 1-1
                      14 -- 1-1

Summary: Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart's 80-yard touchdown run with 6 minutes left in the game broke open a 13-6 defensive struggle as the Bengals fell 20-14 Thursday night at home in preseason game #2. The Bengals, who came into the game wanting to heavily emphasize the passing game, threw the ball 56 times as a team but largely struggled to move the football throughout the night.

Starting QB Carson Palmer went 14 of 26 for 149 yards with an interception in one half of play. QB Shaun Hill played most of the second half going 15 of 23 for 158 yards while throwing one touchdown and an interception. Rookie QB Tyrod Taylor, who came into the game in the third quarter but left with a non-serious injury soon thereafter, went 3 of 7 for 25 yards while throwing one interception. The pick came on a dropped pass by RB Jerome Harrison that was tipped into the air and caught by Panthers CB Richard Marshall.

Cincinnati running backs had a solid game, led by C.J. Spiller's 42-yard rushing effort on 8 carries.

RB Jerome Harrison's 5-yard touchdown reception from Hill made the score 20-14 with 0:28 to go in the game. However Panthers WR Domenik Hixon, who caught a 69-yard touchdown from QB Matt Hasselbeck on Carolina's first possession, recovered the ensuing onsides kick to put the game away.

The story of the game for the Panthers (1-1) was the loss of RB DeAngelo Williams. After rushing for 60 yards in less than two quarters of action, Williams left the game in the first half with what the team is describing as a broken collarbone, which will sideline him for 10-12 weeks.

Cincinnati (1-1) will travel to face Detroit (1-1) next week at Ford Field.

Yeah I think C.J. may end up the guy. The question is now who will be the #2 guy between Jerome Harrison and Bernard Scott.

Yeah Tyrod looked solid in his first action. I felt very comfortable using him and his scrambling ability really helps when trying to improvise and wait for receivers to come open.

I'm excited to see who wins the running back battle..thus far no one is standing out to me, we still have three games though until we need to make a decision. Keep up the great work dude.
                        What up Proof?

Floyd is really making a strong case for the #3 wide out position. He is making some nice plays and he seems to have very sure hands. He'll be our #2 receiver within a year in my opinion. It'll be interesting to see how he progresses.

Great to see you on the board man.

Shaun Hill is entrenched as the #2. Tyrod would have to do something very special the rest of the preseason to become the #2.

Yeah you basically have to search for them. Just look for rookies in the free agent pool. Unfortunately there is no way to tell if they were truely undrafted though or if they were just not signed.

Floyd is having a really solid preseason and it looks like he may challenge Shaun for the slot receiver position. Good luck in your next game!

Good call on that. He is emerging as a go-to guy. He may eventually become the slot man.

It would be tough to live up to that standard again. He didnt look terrible in this game and the one pick wasnt his fault.

He'll be back this next preseason game which I am about to play. He just had a bruised sternum.

Preseason Game 3, Year 3: Cincinnati Bengals at Detroit Lions

Note: The following is a brief summary of the Bengals' August 27, 2011 preseason game at Detroit. Normal full-scale reporting will be reinstituted at the start of the 2011 regular season.

                                45 -- 2-1
                                35 -- 1-2

Summary: The Cincinnati Bengals won a shootout over the host Detroit Lions 45-35 Saturday in both team's third preseason game. Bengals QB Carson Palmer finished the day 13 of 20 for 132 yards and one touchdown & RB C.J. Spiller finished with 93 all-purpose yards and a touchdown reception. However it was the play of rookie 5th round draft pick, FB Anthony Elzy, that stole the show in the second half.

Elzy, drafted 141st overall out of North Carolina, carried the ball 14 times for 113 yards, including a 71-yard burst late in the fourth quarter. The big play set up a 10-yard touchdown pass from QB Tyrod Taylor to Elzy just a few plays later to make the score 38-28 with 5:42 remaining.

"Anthony is really trying to stake a claim for a significant role in this offense," said Bengals head coach Mike Martz.

The Bengals had difficulty stopping the Lions' potent passing attack and allowed them to gain 540 yards of total offense. Lions QB Matthew Stafford finished with 261 passing yards and three touchdowns during the contest. Cincinnati also had a hard time corralling Lions RB Kevin Smith, who finished the day with 96 rushing yards on 16 carries.

"Sure we have some things to clean up on defense and really as well as the offense," said Martz.

"But that is what this time of the year is for. I am not the least bit concerned and think we'll be fine. A lot of those yards came after our starters were removed."

Cincinnati (2-1) will travel to face Atlanta (2-1) in both teams' preseason finale. The Bengals must pare their roster down from 53 to 47 players after their game against the Falcons.
