Is Tyrod Taylor making a big step towards that #2 spot or what?

He's trying to make some noise. We're going to probably go with Hill though but you best believe that if Carson ever goes down (knocks on wood), Taylor will see some snaps.

Wow, you read my mind on this one. Someone is going to be the victim of the numbers game. Between RB, FB, WR, and TE, I can keep 12 guys. It's going to be a matter of how many I want to keep at each spot. Last year I did 3 RBs, 1 FB, 5 WRs, 3 TEs. It is going to be a tough call on who to cut.

We got one more night of auditions to figure it out.

I'll be very interested to see who makes the cut. It looks like Elzy will be on the final roster. He is too versatile not to be. If you need to make roster requirements you could even consider moving him to tailback. I did that with Jonathan Dwyer in my franchise and have never regretted it. I figure too if my fullback ever goes down I can just move him back. Nice win over Detroit. Good luck in your last preseason game!

Bengals | Scott to return kicks tonight
          Mon, 29 Aug 2011 12:42:49 -0700
Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports that Cincinnati Bengals RB Bernard Scott (75) will return kicks during the team's final preseason game tonight at Atlanta. Scott is believed to be on the bubble and the move may indicate that the Bengals' coaching staff wants to see if he is capable of filling another role with the team. Cincinnati must cut their roster down from 53 to 47 after their game with the Falcons.

Preseason Game 4, Year 3: Cincinnati Bengals at Atlanta Falcons

Note: The following is a brief summary of the Bengals' September 3, 2011 preseason game at Atlanta. Normal full-scale reporting will be reinstituted at the start of the 2011 regular season.

            16 -- 2-2
            23 -- 3-1

Summary: Cincinnati lost a hard-fought contest with the Atlanta Falcons 23-16 Saturday night at the Georgia Dome in their preseason finale. With the game tied at 16-16 Bengals rookie QB Tyrod Taylor's interception thrown to Falcons S William Moore resulted in a 70-yard touchdown that gave Atlanta their winning margin with under five minutes to play.

Taylor would get one last chance to lead his team on a potential game-tying or game-winning drive but the team turned it over on downs once it reached the Falcons side of the field with under a minute to play. Taylor finished the game 12 of 23 for a preseason-high 180 yards.

Bengals WR Jacoby Ford had a strong performance as he makes his case to be on the team's final roster. The second year man out of Clemson caught 8 receptions for 136 yards on the day. RB Bernard Scott also had a solid day, gaining 57 yards on the ground along with a touchdown. He also contributed 90 kick return yards during the contest with an average return of 22.5 yards and a long of 25.

Cincinnati rested most of their starters and they will need to be well-rested for next week's regular season opener at home against Pittsburgh on Thursday night. The game pits the Bengals against a Steelers team that defeated them 52-17 in last year's regular season finale.

Cincinnati finishes the 2011 preseason with a 2-2 record. They still have unfinished business to tend to however as they must cut their roster down from 53 to 47 players by noon tomorrow.

Rough...Ryan out with a Dislocated Ankle.

Not a bad schedule this year though, at least on paper. NFC West should be good for 3 wins, I would think.

Washington, who has been a major disappointment since signing a lucrative contract extension just prior to the 2009 season, was beat out by rookie first round draft pick Quentin Castille (81) and free agent signee Tashard Choice (81) as well as veteran RB Shonn Green (81) for a roster spot. Washington immediately becomes an unrestricted free agent.

Costanzo, primarily a special teams player, spent the 2010 season on the Bengals roster as a reserve. Costanzo was beat out by rookie fourth round draft pick LB Scott Lutrus (65) and veteran LB Pisa Tinoisamoa (75) for the team's reserve linebacker spots.

                        Bengals | WR Furrey released
                        Sun, 4 Sep 2011 01:34:49 -0700
Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports that the Cincinnati Bengals have released veteran WR Mike Furrey (64). Furrey, 34, was beat about by second year WR Jacoby Ford (60) for a roster spot during the preseason. "This was probably the toughest cut we had to make because Mike is just one of those players that shows up every day and is realiable," said Bengals head coach Mike Martz. "He'd never wow you with his speed or athletic ability, but he is just a very sound player. He will be on our speed dial all year long." Ford (91 speed) caught 11 receptions for 184 yards during the preseason. Furrey had 8 receptions for 105 yards in the preseason but had several key drops during his limited action.

                        Bengals | TE Manumaleuna released
                        Sun, 4 Sep 2011 01:34:49 -0700
Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports that the Cincinnati Bengals have released veteran TE Brandon Manumaleuna (67). Manumaleuna, going into his 11th season, lost his job as the #2 tight end to second year TE Ryan Moya (62). The 6-2 288 pound blocking specialist was likely made expendable once the team drafted a second fullback, fifth round draft pick Anthony Elzy (76). Moya (85 speed) has displayed tremendous pass-catching ability each of the past two preseasons and the team is anxious to get him onto the field in the regular season.

Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports that the Cincinnati Bengals have named rookie 6th round draft pick QB Tyrod Taylor (52) their third-string, emergency quarterback. By NFL rule, Taylor is exempt from the 47 man active roster and should he enter the game, the Bengals are not permitted to have another player take a snap from center for the remainder of that particular contest.

Just catching up DGZ. Been pretty busy as of late. I really like the way Taylor and Elzy played in the pre-season. I think its the right move to keep Taylor at #3 for now though. Depending on his potential rating he may progress nicely. Right now though, his 52 ovr keeps him as the emergency quarterback.

Looking forward to the regular season and the Bengals getting into the playoffs!

I definitely think you made all the right cuts. It was sad to see so many veterans fall victim though. I think Moya could be a bit of a sleeper in your offense. I expect big things out of him. Good luck against the steelers. It's a really tough way to open the season but it'll be a huge victory if you can pull off the win. Good luck!

Yeah it was a tough call between Scott and Manumaleuna. In the end though I decided that I was ready to get Moya on the field and I didn't need to keep 3 tight ends in this style of offense. I also think Scott could be an asset down the road in the case of injury. He'll return kicks though just so he isn't rotting on the bench and wasting a roster spot.

Tyrod's potential rating is a D. If I can get him into the mid 60s though, he could be a decent back-up/special play type QB in a year or two. He's my proverbial project-QB.
