However WR Shaun McDonald was "Johnny on the Spot" and comes away with the reception and takes it in for a 58-yard touchdown to make the score 17-7 in the second quarter. The Cincinnati Bengals defeated the Houston Texans 48-21 Sunday at Reliant Stadium. QB Shaun Hill, playing place of an injured Carson Palmer, completed 17 of his 26 passes for 302 yards and two touchdowns. He was also aided by a productive running game, led by RB C.J. Spiller's 14-carry 75-yard performance that includes a 38-yard touchdown run.

Two interceptions returned for touchdowns in the third quarter blew the game wide open for the Bengals. MLB Rey Mauauluga returned a Matt Schaub interception 31 yards for a touchdown on the first play of the quarter to make the score 24-14. Late in the period, CB Leon Hall returned a pick 82 yards for a touchdown to make the score 31-14. The Bengals finished with four interceptions on the day.

"The way we started the third quarter really provided us tremendous momentum," said Bengals head coach Mike Martz.

"We took advantage of the turnovers with direct scores. Despite the yardage we gave up, I thought we really did a good job defensively as far as getting our hands on the football."

Texans QB Matt Schaub put up huge numbers though much of those were inflated due to playing catch-up most of the fourth quarter versus the Bengals' prevent defense. Schaub finished 31 of 43 for a career-high 478 yards with 3 touchdowns and the previously mentioned 4 interceptions.

The Bengals (1-2) will host Jacksonville (1-2) next week at Paul Brown Stadium.

i agree, palmer needs to get his act together and toughen up.

Palmer's act is definitely getting old. Getting rid of him is not an option though...too cost prohibitive. It is nice to see that I have a good back-up option now though rather than the vaunted duo of Jordan Palmer and J.T. O'Sullivan.

Damn very tough start to the season, kinda dashed the high expectations the team had coming in.....I noticed you couldn't run the ball much against the Niners....Bengals will get it together though, too much talent on this team and 0-2 is not the end of the world.....kinda early to use the term "must win game," but the team could use a win against the Texans.....how serious was the injury to Palmer?

Palmer will be back for the next game against Jacksonville. I hired a new training staff in the off-season that specializes in QB Toughness so hopefully the long-term injuries to Palmer are a thing of the past.

Tough tough loss man. Overtime...just a heartbreaker. Spiller really played his heart out to pull it together and Shaun Hill almost pulled it off. It looks like you should be okay against the Texans as long as you don't force Hill to win the game. Running game needs to get on track against the Texans and I think it will. I'm thinking Hester might get it going. He has been clutch in the past. I'm feeling the first win of the season. Luckily the injury to Palmer is nothing devastating so I would say those high expectations are certainly still there. Good luck getting that first win. Go Bengals!

We need to get Hester involved. He's been like that the last couple of years: Slow start and then boom, 100-yard game. His production comes in spurts. He's a very streaky player it seems.

Tough way to start the season DGZ. I was shocked to see the blowout loss against the Steelers and then you lose in OT to the 49ers after coming from behind. Tough way to start the season as a whole.

Palmer continues to be your version of "Fragile" Fred Taylor - always has something bothering him or hindering him from being 100%. Hopefully, Spiller can carry the offense against Houston and you can get that first W of the season.

Spiller is the man. He feels like my own version of Marshall Faulk when playing. He's deadly in the slot and out wide and he is starting to find the running lanes. He's getting better with every game as a runner it seems.

How do you get those stats to line up so nicely...mine end up all over no matter how straight I get them in the initial edit.....do you use a template? Where can I get one?

Actually, I do game reports that my brother and I send back and forth to each other in a word document, but it definitely has a style that has been borrowed from many of the awesome chises that are on here and were on the former MM. Pics/stats/newspaper type layout. That's how we keep each other informed on how our progress is going in whatever game we are playing. I doubt anyone would want to read it though, b/c my bro and I create our own teams of family, friends, etc. and no one could relate. We do it for like 5 different sports titles. So, to keep me based in "reality" I enjoy your fine work.

I think I remember you telling me that over on MM once. That sounds pretty neat. Its gotten to the point for me where I can't play a sports video game unless I was documenting it and had some sort of audience following it along with me.

The defense looked great against the run, a little flaky against the pass but I guess when you force four interceptions you can't complain too much about the yardage allowed in garbage time. You're right...it had the same feel to it. I actually played that game Sunday morning before the real life action started. I had no idea that my play would be comparable to a real life play that same day. Good stuff.

Spiller is a beast. He already has over 400 all-purpose yards this year. I could certainly see him leading the NFL in that category this year.

Mays is finally becoming the dominant force we need him to be. He is in around a lot more plays this season compared to last.

He had to wear a bulky brace and padding to protect the injury which required surgery just less than two weeks ago. BOTTOM: Palmer finds WR Shaun McDonald on a quick slant route and the speedy receiver slips past a tackler on his way to a 70-yard touchdown to cut the Bengals' deficit to 10-7 in the second quarter.

QB Palmer successful in his return, throws for 250 yards and a touchdown to lead Cincinnati to second straight victory | CB Bowman's big fourth quarter touchdown seals the win for the Bengals | Team to travel to 2-2 Cleveland next week with a chance to go over .500

The Cincinnati Bengals, who trailed 10-0 early, were able to comeback and defeat the Jacksonville Jaguars 24-17 Sunday at Paul Brown Stadium. Cincinnati QB Carson Palmer, who missed last week's game after undergoing surgery to repair an upper arm fracture to his left, non-throwing arm, returned to the field and went 17 of 28 for 250 yards with 1 touchdown and 1 interception. Palmer's touchdown pass was thrown to WR Shaun McDonald , who went 70 yards for the score and cut Cincinnati's early deficit to 10-7 in the second quarter.

Just before halftime, the Bengals were facing a 3rd and 13 from the Jaguars' 24-yard line with under 20 seconds remaining in the half. Bengals head coach Mike Martz decided to play it safe to set up for a field goal via an off-tackle running play and a quick timeout. However Bengals RB C.J. Spiller had other plans, taking the handoff and going 24 yards for a touchdown to give Cincinnati a 14-10 lead going into halftime.

"Thinking back on the tide of the game and the way things were going at that point, that was a very pivotal sequence," said Martz.

"The thought at that moment was that we wanted to make sure that we came away with points and our odds of converting a 3rd and 13 were minimal at that part of the field, not to mention even if we do get it, the odds are stacked against us actually putting it into the endzone.

"C.J. did a great job of following his blockers and weaving his way for the score and it gave us a ton of momentum going into the break."

Late in the fourth quarter, with the Bengals leading 17-10, Jacksonville faced a 4th and 1 at the Bengals 28-yard line with under 7 minutes to go. On the play, Jaguars QB David Garrard dropped back to pass and setup an apparent tight end screen pass. However Garrard's pass attempt to TE Brad Cottam to the left sideline was ruled a lateral. Bengals CB Zackary Bowman scooped the ball up and returned it for a 69-yard game-clinching touchdown that made the score 24-10 with 6:38 to go in the game.

"The defense really buckled down after a very shaky start," said Bengals defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel.

"After that first quarter we decided to start to use a lot more zone pressures than we normally would and it seemed to have a big effect on Garrard.

"Bowman's big play was the result of good pressure and a rushed throw."

Cincinnati (2-2) will travel next week to face Cleveland (2-2).

Nice win. 2 in a row. Hopefully Palmer can stay healthy. I know Hill played well in his absence but I don't think Hill takes you to the playoffs and beyond.
