That was quite the all around showing. You crushed Philly. Nice to see Leonard back on the team even if he probably wont make the final cut.

Note: The following is a brief summary of the Bengals' August 24, 2012 preseason game versus Carolina. Normal full-scale reporting will be reinstituted at the start of the 2012 regular season.

      20 -- 1-2
      22 -- 2-1

Summary: The Cincinnati Bengals got five field goals from PK Shayne Graham and a first quarter touchdown pass from QB Carson Palmer to WR Jordy Nelson en route to a 22-20 preseason win over Carolina at home. In what is likely several of the team's starter's final tune-up before the regular season, Cincinnati was able to force four Panthers turnovers, including two interceptions by CB Zackary Bowman.

Bowman, in the midst of a heated battle for the team's starting cornerback position opposite Joe Haden, helped shut down the Panthers' passing attack, as the team held them to just 171 yards through the air. Rookie first round draft pick out of LSU, CB Patrick Peterson, also caught an interception, his first of the preseason.

"One of the things we set out to do this preseason is emphasize getting turnovers," said Bengals new defensive coordinator Jerry Gray.

"Zackary and Patrick both made great plays and we also did a good job of forcing a couple of fumbles. That'll go a long way in determining how good of a defense we'll be this season."

The Panthers scored a touchdown with 4:30 to play when back-up QB Colt McCoy found WR Patrick Crayton from 23 yards out to make the score 22-20. However they were unable to re-gain possession of the football.

Cincinnati second year QB Tyrod Taylor's 11-yard completion to rookie RB Stephfon Green on 4th and 10 from the Panthers 39-yard line with under a minute to play sealed the victory for the Bengals. Taylor, Cincinnati's third string quarterback, finished with a team-high 140 passing yards on the day.

Bengals QB Carson Palmer left the game in the second quarter with what head coach Mike Martz described as a bruised sternum and he did not return. However Martz indicated that the injury is not serious and he could have returned to the game. The team will likely rest Palmer in next week's preseason finale along with several other key starters.

The Bengals (2-1) will host the Giants (2-0-1) next week in their preseason finale.

Another solid win. The defense looks to be playing great under Gray. Hopefully it will carry over to the regular season. With all those interceptions its tough to say who has the edge in the battle for the second CB position.

That was definitely a coming out party of sorts. I have never blown out the CPU like that in this dynasty (I have been on the wrong end of them though).

I needed to bring Leonard in because I found myself not wanting to use any of my main backs in the second half of preseason games. Leonard will get a ton of playing time in this last game.

I think there are two keys to the defensive turnaround displayed during the preseason: 1. I am playing a little more conservatively and picking and choosing when I am going to blitz. This has led to fewer big plays given up.

Secondly, I think switching to the 4-3 has been a big factor. I think the 3-4 defense in this game is fundamentally broken, which is par for the course with video game football.

As far as the CB competition. I think I am going to go with Haden and Bowman as the starters, Peterson at nickle and Arenas at dime. We still have one more game left to evaluate though.

No doubt. Hill is a guy that is reliable. Sure he is only rated a 63, but he has high short and medium pass accuracy ratings and that enables him to effectively run the dink and dunk offense when he is in the game.

Nelson looks like he is primed for a big year.

Sorry for the somewhat slow pace with this thing men, been an extremely busy past couple of weeks. I'm going to knock out this last preseason game today and hopefully get the regular season started maybe tomorrow. I am definitely anxious.

Note: The following is a brief summary of the Bengals' August 31, 2012 preseason game versus the New York Giants. Normal full-scale reporting will be reinstituted at the start of the 2012 regular season.

            49 -- 3-0-1
            14 -- 2-2

Summary: The Cincinnati Bengals were blown out by the New York Giants 49-14 at home during the fourth and final week of the 2012 NFL preseason. The Bengals rested most of their key players and it showed as the Giants starters went up and down the field amassing an early lead in the game.

Giants quarterbacks Eli Manning and Tom Brandstater combined to go 22 of 25 for 306 yards and 3 touchdowns against the Bengals secondary en route to the easy win.

Cincinnati concludes the 2012 preseason with a 2-2 record. The team must now turn their attention to trimming their roster from 55 to 47 players by noon tomorrow. The Bengals will face the Philadelphia Ealges on the road on NFL Opening Weekend. The game marks a rematch of the team's week two preseason matchup in which Cincinnati won 49-17 in Philadelphia.

Notes: Bengals electric rookie RB Stephfon Green left the game in the second quarter with broken ribs. Green is expected to miss next week's season opener with the injury according to Bengals head coach Mike Martz.

I am hoping for a better ending to the 2012 season. That heartbreaking playoff loss last season could help to bring this team together.
This is the year man. It is Super Bowl or bust for us. The opening schedule is definitely brutal. If we make it out of the first quarter of the season above .500, I will be very happy.

What do you mean? I do list the colleges during the draft.

Game 1, Year 4: Cincinnati Bengals at Philadelphia Eagles

                                - 2012 Opening Weekend -

                                29 -- 0-1
                                30 -- 1-0

After scoring a touchdown with 0:08 remaining in the game to make the score 30-29, Bengals head coach Mike Martz made a unforgettable gamble and decided to go for the two-point conversion. On the play, QB Carson Palmer dropped back to pass and hit FB Jacob Hester wide open in the flat. However after stumbling and re-gaining his footing, the 3-time Pro Bowler was tackled short of the goal line by Eagles SS Sean Jones, putting an end to the Bengals' comeback hopes.

Bengals FB Jacob Hester gets stuffed on last second two-point gamble, Martz's risky decision costs Bengals in 30-29 opening day loss in Philadelphia | Eagles QB McNabb torches Bengals secondary for 398 passing yards on the day | Team to travel to Baltimore in week two

In what will go down in Bengals infamy, head coach Mike Martz made a decision he'd soon regret. After the team scored what was thought to be the game-tying touchdown, Martz decided to gamble and go for two and in the end it cost his team a 30-29 opening day loss to Philadelphia at Lincoln Financial Field. On the two-point play, Bengals QB Carson Palmer hit FB Jacob Hester in the right flat for what should have been an easy score. However Hester appeared to lose his balance and was immediately hit by Eagles SS Sean Jones, stopping him just inches away from the goal line.

"That's a play we have in our back pockets for short yardage situations," said Martz.

"Really if I had to do it again, I would have made the same call. It's a quick-hitting play and the read is basically from fullback to tight end. In all honesty, we had both the fullback open as well as the tight end. Carson decided the safer throw was to the fullback however you can't factor in if a player is going to lose his balance or not and that's what seemed to happen."

The Bengals initially lined up for the extra point but the Eagles called a timeout to ice PK Shayne Graham. That's when Martz changed his mind and decided to go for two.

"I decided that with the way the game was going in with either team unable to stop the other, that I was not going to allow this game to be decided by a coin toss," said Martz.

"This was a calculated gamble and not an impulse move. It was a road game, hostile environment, and a game in which both offenses were moving up and down the field at ease. We decided to put our destiny in our own hands and obviously came up short."

The Bengals, who trailed throughout the ball game, had just completed a 10-play drive that culminated with a 6-yard touchdown pass from Palmer to TE Chase Coffman. Palmer finished the day 27 of 44 for 334 yards and 2 touchdowns with no interceptions.

Philadelphia QB Donovan McNabb was the hero of the game for the home-standing Eagles, as he went 21 of 28 for 398 yards with 3 touchdowns. McNabb finished with a whopping three receivers who had 100-yard days - DeSean Jackson (109), Jeremy Maclin (110) and rookie first round pick Nick Toon (103).

The game was quite a contrast from the team's preseason week two battle which saw the Bengals win 49-17.

"This one got a little out of hand early as far as the pace we wanted. We really weren't expected a shootout type game," said Martz.

"There is a lot of us to take from this game to try to improve on. Defensively, in particular in the secondary, we must play better to avoid these types of games."

The Bengals (0-1) will travel to face division rival Baltimore (0-1) next week on the road. The Ravens swept Cincinnati last season in two games that saw the Bengals blow late leads. In week 13 of last season, Baltimore scored 22 unanswered points in the game's final 4:16 to oust Cincinnati 49-38.

In week 17, the Ravens scored 17 unanswered points in the final 5:45 to beat the Bengals 40-36. The loss would cost Cincinnati a first round BYE in the playoffs and the team eventually fell to the Colts on Wildcard Weekend.
