Chapter 5: Partner
September 4, 2024
The hot topic at school - at least for the freshman and sophomore class - was Candace and I 'officially' being together. Some classmates were surprised, some were jealous, and some just didn't give two shits about it. But when we walked in holding hands, we both made a statement that we were off-limits to the opposite sex.
We had to go our separate ways before first period, since I had Freshman History and she had Geometry. I walked into Mrs. Allen's classroom and took my usual spot in the back, that way I wouldn't be called on for any of the questions. Pulling out my iPhone from my pocket, I started to play Madden 2025 when I overheard my name.
"Sean Joseph Woy and Brandi Sullivan."
"What did she want?" I thought to myself, before turning to my friend Cody. "What's she talking about?"
"She's choosing groups for the President project," he replied. "You're with Brandi."
He nudged his eyes over to his right and sure enough, there was the blonde freshman cheerleader/soccer player who was easily one of the hottest girls in our class. She just looked at me and smiled, then turned her head back into her notebook to continue jotting down notes.
"Why do you get so lucky?" Cody chuckled as Mrs. Allen continued to announce more group pairings.
"What do you mean?"
"You have the hottest sophomore girl as your girlfriend and the hottest freshman girl as your project partner. You need to share the love a little bit, man."
I laughed just loud enough for Mrs. Allen to hear me. "Excuse me Mr. Woy, but would you like to share what you're laughing at with the rest of the us?"
"Okay Mrs. Allen," I sarcastically answered. "What's the difference between Santa Claus and Tiger Woods?"
"Is it appropriate for class?"
"Eh, not really," I revealed, drawing laughter from all my classmates. She just shook her head and continued to announce groups for the project.
"But seriously, what's Candace going to say about this?" Cody said, continuing our conversation. "I'm almost positive she doesn't like Brandi."
"I'll talk to her about it when I see her," I replied. "I'm sure she'll be fine with it."
...
"Seriously?" Candace responded with when I told her about Brandi being my partner for my history project. She was visually upset with it, but understood that it was just a case of bad luck.
"Yeah, I didn't have a choice," I answered, shrugging my shoulders. "Mrs. Allen picked them for us. Why are you and her on such bad terms?"
"Long story," she said, before giving me a kiss on the cheek. "I got to get to class though. I'll see you in lunch, babe."
I let go of her hand and watched as that perfect body waltz down the hall. But as I turned to go to my next class, I ran into a girl and both our books fell.
"Sorry about that," I apologized, while getting down to gather my books. But when my eyes came back up from the ground, I noticed the pretty blonde figure that I would be getting to know a lot better the next few weeks standing above me.
"It's okay," she responded, before realizing who it was. "So I guess this is 'The Sean Joseph Woy' I've heard about, huh?"
"Yeah, people say I look like him but I don't see the resemblance," I joked, trying to get her to laugh. It worked as she smiled, but I didn't have the time for small talk. "But I got to go down to the gym for lifting. I'll talk to you later, I guess."
She just continued smiling and walked away, turning around to take one last glance at me. I just gathered my thoughts, then walked down to the weight room to meet up with my teammates for second period.Last edited by Woy; 07-12-2010, 02:02 PM.

Chapter 6: Balancing Act
September 15, 2024
"It's been almost two weeks, Sean Joseph. When are we going to finally work on this thing?"
I looked at Brandi behind me, questioning my commitment about this group project for Freshman History. But as soon as I turned my head to talk to her about it, I caught a glimpse of the popular sophomore cheerleader walking down the hall in my direction and quickly made a decision about the situation at hand.
"Saturday afternoon," I replied, before turning away. "We'll talk about it later." From there, I turned the opposite direction from where she was going and stopped right in Candace's walking path.
"Hey babe," she greeted as we exchanged kisses with one another. "Discussing that stupid project?"
"Yeah," I replied. "You don't know how much I want to trade partners with someone." The last statement was kind of a lie, despite my relationship with Candace, because I felt almost equally attracted - at least physically - to Brandi. Plus with her being in my grade, I felt like I should get to know her a little better somehow.
"Have you thought about homecoming at all?" she asked, straying off to another subject.
"Not really," I answered, assuming she meant how I was going to ask her. "I just thought since we're together..."
"Well I'd want to go with you," she cut me off. "But you haven't really asked yet and if someone comes around and asks me cutely, I might just go with them." Her face didn't really hint whether she was joking or not and I started getting worried about the whole situation. But another kiss and hug assured me that she wasn't upset. "Talk to you in lunch."
...
"Woy's back to pass...looks for Harris across the middle...he hits him and there's open field ahead! The 20, 10, touchdown Davidson Academy! That'll add insult to injury as the Bears lead this game 38-10 with just one minute left."
"I know that was against a second-string defense, but Woy looks very impressive out there in garbage time. Pretty obvious, but the freshman is going to a very special player for Davidson Academy."
Jogging off the field to constant cheering, I watched as their offense got the ball back and their quarterback just kneeled it twice to end the game. After shaking hands, I went to the sidelines to find the girl with the #7's painted on her cheeks. Kissing her lips when I found her, I took her hand and led her behind the bleachers.
"What are we doing?" she asked excitedly.
"It's a surprise," I replied, halting our walk in the back parking lot. She started looking around frantically for a sign or something, before I pointed in the direction of the practice field beside the lot, which had soccer goals on them.
"What's over there?" she asked even more excitedly than last time. I put my finger over my lips to quiet her a little, then took her by the hand again and walked over to the nearest soccer goal.
"Yes, I'll go with you," she said with a huge grin as she looked over the banner covering the goal that simply said 'Homecoming?'.
I gave her a kiss, then walked her out to the field to meet up with her parents.
...
*KNOCK KNOCK*
"Oh hey," Brandi greeted as I stood outside her door. I kept true to my word when I promised that I'd work on our project on Saturday, so sure enough, I was here. Candace had a family matter to attend so she didn't really know that I was over at her 'enemy's' house.
"Let's work on this," I replied while walking in to a pretty normal living room. She had her computer on the desk in the corner, so I pulled over a seat next to her and got out my history book.
We were making some progress before stopping half an hour in to get something to eat, check our Facebooks; all that jazz. While we were taking a break, we got to talking a little; trying to find out a little more about each other.
"Hang on, I got a text from Seth," she cut off our conversation by reaching for her phone.
"Seth? As in Seth Harris?"
"Yeah, I'm going to Homecoming with him," she revealed, shocking me a bit because Seth never told me about this. "You know where we're all meeting up to eat?"
"Not a clue."
Suddenly, I was looking less forward to Homecoming. It would be quite a balancing act next Saturday with Candace and Brandi being together most of the time.Last edited by Woy; 07-12-2010, 02:02 PM.

Chapter 7: Surprises Aren't Always Good
September 18, 2024
Homecoming was tomorrow and I was still trying to figure out a plan on how to make things between Candace and Brandi as calm as possible. But brainstorming during my classes wasn't really working and I decided to live with the fact that there would be a bit of awkwardness in the group, at least when we ate.
But before the big night, we had a football game to be played. Bottom-feeder Smyrna High School was coming into our building, becoming the pawn in our annual Homecoming blow-out. I was a little more nervous about this one, because with it being a guaranteed snoozer, I'd get a lot of playing time and could possibly play an entire half.
...
"What's with the smile, hun?" Candace asked as she sat her tray down on the lunch table.
"Just ready for the game tonight," I replied with a kiss on the cheek. "I'll get to see a lot of PT, instead of this 'end of the game' bullshit."
"Oh I thought it was because the dance is tomorrow," she said with a mix of disappointment and sarcasm. "I'm so excited though!"
"Yeah, I am too," I agreed. "You know what we're doing afterward?"
"I don't know what you're doing, but I can't do anything because we're going to Lexington in the morning for a family thing."
"Well then I'll just go home or something," I stated, bummed that I can't spend the night with her.
"No hun, go out and have fun," she insisted. "I trust you so I won't care. Seriously."
"Okay."
The rest of the day was a blur; I couldn't think straight because of the eventful weekend ahead of me. Walking down with Seth to the locker room after our last class, I heard a faint voice call my name and turned my head to see a good friend of mine smiling at me.
"What's up Krista?" I greeted her with a hug.
Krista Williams, another dime in the freshman class, has always been one of my good friends...nothing more. We were neighbors most of my younger years when I moved to Tennessee but she moved into a much smaller apartment after her parents got divorced. I still kept in touch with her and despite others nudging me to get into a relationship with her, we both agreed that we didn't feel that way about one another.
"Nothing, just wanted to wish you good luck tonight," she replied. "What are you doing after Homecoming?"
"Probably going to Greg's," I answered, still unsure if that's what I was actually doing or not. "You going to be there?"
"Yeah, I think so," she said. "Candace going out with you too?"
"Nah, she has a family thing in Lexington the next day and is leaving in the morning."
"Oh, well because I know Brandi's going to be there," she started before I cut her off.
"I'm not going to cheat on Candace, Krista."
"I know," she said reassuringly. "But I heard Brandi say to one of her friends that the only reason she was going with Seth was to get closer to you. I'm just saying, don't be surprised if she tries to do something there."
"Okay. Well I better get going, I'll see you tomorrow." We embraced in another hug, before I let go to finish my walk to the locker room.
...
"Come on, one more drive," Josh pleaded to Coach on the sidelines after Tyler returned a punt to the 45-yard line. It was already 28-0 midway through the second quarter and they showed no signs of getting across the 50 yard line, let alone compete in this game.
"Okay, one and then Woy comes in," he finally gave in to his star senior quarterback. "I don't care if it's a three-and-out or a touchdown, this is the last one."
Josh didn't even wait for the play call; he ran out to the huddle and picked his favorite play on his wristband. After the group broke out to the formation, I watched as Josh motioned all his available receivers out to the sides, making it an open shotgun. The weak-side linebacker showed blitz and I figured the offensive line would change their protection scheme to pick him up.
However, when the cadence ended and the ball was snapped, the left tackle didn't pick up the blitzing linebacker. Josh went into his drop, looking for a receiver, and as soon as he raised the ball to throw it, his leg was taken out by the attacker. Josh and the ball both fell quickly to the ground; the ball being picked up by an offensive lineman, the quarterback being picked up by the medical staff.
"Doesn't look good," Seth whispered to me as I saw the cart come out for the fallen senior. Sure enough, Josh had a gruesome look of pain on his face and he was clutching his knee like it was about to fall off. It was horrific to watch.
He finally was placed on the cart and was drove to the ambulance on the side of the bleachers. With silence filling the once cheerful air, I jogged to the huddle and awaited my first play as quarterback of the first team offense.
To my displeasure, we safely ran the ball for the rest of the half, setting the halftime score still at 28-0. We all sat in the locker-room, a bit more talkative since Josh's injury, but still were awaiting the word of it. After small talk from one teammate to another, Coach walked into the room as a trainer walked out from behind him. He stepped to the front, wiped what looked like a tear from his eye, and started to mutter the words we dreaded all along.
"Completely blown knee...Josh is done."Last edited by Woy; 07-12-2010, 02:03 PM.

Chapter 8: The L-Word
September 18-19, 2024
"You nervous, kid?" Coach came up behind me and patted me on the back. I hid my emotion behind my dark visor just like my father did when he played, but it seemed like Coach could see into my apprehensive eyes. "Relax. We have a 28-0 lead and we aren't exactly playing a power-house tonight. Just take a deep breath before every snap, read the defense and make the right throw."
I nodded my head in response, then Coach pushed me towards the field as we brought the second half kickoff to the 32 yard line. After a few running plays that netted a first down, a pass play finally came in from the sidelines. I licked my fingers in anticipation, crouched under center and awaited the snap.
"Blue 19, Blue 19!" I shouted, stomping my right foot down to motion my receiver to the left side. "Set...hut!"
I dropped back and awaited my tight end and just-motioned receiver to cross paths, hoping to free up one of them for an easy hook-up. However, the outside linebacker read my eyes from the beginning and as soon as I released the ball, he jumped the route and intercepted the pass. An offensive lineman tackled him right away, but the damage was done. I lost confidence in myself and I knew the Davidson Academy faithful did too.
...
"Why are you so down, hun?" Candace asked, giving me a hug as I walked out of the locker-room with my bag over my left shoulder. Despite my early interception, we cruised to an easy 45-3 victory, but my performance was far from legendary. I only completed four of 10 passes for 36 yards and the early third-quarter mistake.
"Played like shit," I answered, throwing the bag in the back of my dad's truck. Her frown made me feel worse, but I picked up both her and my spirits with a promise. "I'll get over it though, because tomorrow will be awesome."
"Yes it will," she agreed with a smile. "You have no clue how excited I am."
"You have no clue how excited I am for this day to end," I muttered to myself before picking my head up to give her a kiss on the lips. I then walked her to her parents' car before stepping inside my dad's, taking me away from my sanctuary that caused more problems than it got rid of tonight.
...
The next day came by fast, as I didn't roll out of bed until two in the afternoon. From the time I woke up to the time I was standing outside Candace's door, I spent the duration picking up our flowers, taking an hour bath in the jacuzzi tub, and chillin' to Eminem's most underrated album 'Recovery'; released 14 years ago.
Candace wanted to take my dad's Ferrari, so when we pulled up in her driveway, I saw a smile peek out the front window before the blind closed. Her and her mom then walked outside to greet my father and I and after some quick pictures, we drove off to Olive Garden where a bunch of us were meeting to eat.
"Hey yo Seth!" I shouted to the end of the one dining room where I saw our group sitting. He picked his head up and nodded to acknowledge my presence, then we did a little hand-shake before I sat down beside Candace and looked through the menu.
As we all were making some small talk, I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket and pulled it under the table to see who it was.
"where u goin after the dance?"
I looked over to the other side of the table and saw Seth's date smiling at me. She then raised her brow, signaling to answer the question, in which I responded, "greg's...why?"
A minute later, I got another text from Brandi. "nice. ill be there too (;"
I just smirked, then shoved my phone back in my pocket. After talking with Candace a good bit, our food finally came out and I received another text. "is she going too?" I didn't respond with a text, but rather with a horizontal movement of the head. She shot back one last smile, then dipped her head back down into her meal.
...
"And your Homecoming king and queen are Josh Thomas and Michelle Cook!"
I took a seat by Candace as the king, queen and rest of the court went up for their required slow dance. I spent almost all my time with Candace, whether it was grinding, regular dancing, or slow-dancing; I was making sure to make this night special and as the hours passed, I started to fall more and more for her.
Once the whole group got their dance in, the music started up again for the last song of the night. I took Candace by the hand and led her to the middle of the dance floor, where I gently put my hands down low on her waist and let the music set the mood.
"Did you have a great time tonight?"
"Yes," she answered with a huge grin. "Nothing could ever be better."
The song continued to play and slowly she started to lay her head on my chest. I gave her a little kiss on the forehead, which had her look up at me astonishingly with her beautiful blue eyes. She then picked her head up, continued to keep the same grin on her face, and mouthed three words to me.
"I love you."
As I responded, "I love you too," I caught Brandi dancing with Seth out of the corner of my eye. She didn't look too happy but once she saw me glancing over at her, her expression changed and she winked at me. I thought nothing of it and dipped my chin down to give Candace one last kiss before the song finally stopped.
